With this abridged paperback edition of The Gulag Archipelagos original three volumes-created with the cooperation of the author-you can introduce your students to a man and a book that helped to change the course of history.

An undisputed masterpiece of world literature, The Gulag Archipelago renders the four decades of terror and oppression into human terms. Drawing on his own experience before, during and after his eleven years of incarceration and exile, on evidence provided by more than 200 fellow prisoners, and on Soviet archives, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn reveals with torrential narrative and dramatic power the entire apparatus of Soviet repression, the state within the state that once ruled all-powerfully with its creation by Lenin in 1918.

Through specific portraits of its victimshis man, that woman, that childstudents will encounter the secret police operations, the labor camps and prisons, the uprooting or extermination of whole populations, the welcome that awaited Russian soldiers who had been German prisoners of war. They will also witness astounding moral courage, the incorruptibility with which the individual or a few scattered groups, all defenseless, endured brutality and degradation. It is Solzhenitsyns genius that transmutes this horrific indictment into a literary miracle.

In the new introduction by Edward E. Ericson, Jr., the abridger, instructs students:

Given the nature of the Soviet experiment, the political dimension of life is never far from Solzhenitsyn's mind. But he always approaches politics in moral terms. Anyone, then, who views human reality primarily through the prism of politics will misread Gulag. . . .To read Gulag through a moral lens is to understand that government power can perpetrate all sorts of atrocities upon human beings, body and soul, but it can never fully succeed in quenching the human spirit. Yes, some persons will submit and will die spiritually. But others, like Ivan Denisovich, will endure and prevail. Despite all of the indignities inflicted upon them, their innate human dignity will remain intact. In this sense totalitarianism must always fail.

The Gulag Archipelagoa scathing indictment of Communist tyranny and an eloquent affirmation of the human spirit-will convince your students that works of art can be a catalyst for change in the world.

Fantastic purchase
Size: 12.5, Color: Black
Fantastic purchase. I had a trip to Spain planned and wanted shoes that would work both for lots of walking and also more dressy events so I bought these. After a nine day trip to Spain, walking over 20,000 steps a day through cobble stone streets I can report these shoes held up, were comfortable, gave no blisters, and all with virtually no break in time for the shoes. I wear a size 12 but bought a half size larger and it was a perfect fit. Definitely recommend these.

If you’re going for cushion and looks, these do it.
Size: 9.5, Color: Grey
These are massively cushiony. They fit as sized, slip on well, and look very good. It seems like they should hold up well.

Nice and affordable, but poor arch support and mushy insoles.
Size: 11 Wide, Color: Black
These shoes look nice and feel comfortable at first, but the soft memory foam type bottoms on these don't provide enough support. I am a big guy and find that over the course of the day the insoles compress and my feet end up at an angle. After a long day on my feet, my dogs are barking and my leg muscles are tight I think from walking on an angle. I added my GoodFeet arch support and they help a little with arch support, but the insole is so soft that it absorbs the bulge quite a bit. If you're skinny and need a decent looking pair of shoes on the cheap, they might be ok for you. I would not recommend long walks or strenuous activity in them. I will say they are lightweight, breathable and a decent value if you don't have flat feet and a beer belly (I don't even drink beer, how'd that happen, WTH?!)

Love the shoes.
I love these shows. Super cushioned and comfortable. Makes casual but professional dress so easy. Buying different color because I like them so much. They are true to size. Maybe a tad short in toe box.

Stylish, Comfortable, and Great for Everyday Wear
Size: 11, Color: Grey
The Marc Joseph New York Men’s Edison Street shoes are a standout — stylish enough for work or a night out, but comfortable enough for daily wear. The hands-free technology makes them easy to slip on and off without sacrificing fit or support. They have a polished, classic look that pairs well with both casual and dressier outfits, and the comfort level stayed high even after a full day on my feet. Good quality, flattering design, and a versatile choice if you want shoes that look sharp and feel great. Would recommend and buy again.
