While trying to build a lean-to against the garden fence, David peers through a knot hole in that fence and sees, not his mother's garden, but a different place entirely. It's a place with huge trees, a little stream, and wide open fields. It would be a perfect place for a boy and his dog to spend the day building a fort or a tree house. When he tries to poke a stick through the hole, it is sucked to the other side with great force. David can see it lying on the grass. He starts wondering what else could go though that knothole?
