The 'Redwing' highbush cranberry (Viburnum trilobum 'J.N. Select') is a popular and very hardy deciduous shrub, specifically chosen for prairie landscapes like Saskatchewan due to its exceptional multi-season interest and resilience in cold climates (Zone 2a). It is known for its beautiful brick-red new growth, stunning crimson fall color, and abundant edible berries. Foliage: Leaves emerge a brick-red color in the spring before maturing to a dark green in the summer. The fall color is a highly ornamental, brilliant burgundy or crimson, providing a spectacular display. Flowers: Flat-topped clusters of lacy white "lacecap" flowers appear in late spring, attracting pollinators like butterflies and bees. Fruit: Large, bright red berry clusters appear in late summer and persist through winter, offering visual appeal and a food source for birds. The berries are edible for humans but have a tart, sour flavor, typically used for jams, jellies, and preserves. Size & Form: It has a dense, multi-stemmed, upright-spreading habit of growth, typically maturing to a height of 8–10 feet (2.5–3 m) and a spread of 5–7 feet (1.5–2.1 m). Hardiness: Extremely cold-hardy, thriving in USDA Hardiness Zones 2 to 7. Light & Soil: Adaptable and grows well in full sun to partial shade, though full sun produces the best fruit set and fall color. It tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay and moist-to-wet areas. Maintenance: A low-maintenance shrub that is resistant to deer and urban pollution. Pruning should be done after flowering to avoid removing the current season's flowers. If you need any more photos or additional information on this product, send us a message using the chat button on our website with the product name, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
