About the AuthorAnne Currie is a tech veteran who has been a part of the industry as a developer, senior manager, and startup founder for nearly thirty years working on everything from high performance C software in the 90s, to e-commerce in the 00s, to modern operations in the 10s. She is a campaigner for future-proof, sustainable systems and regularly writes and speaks on the subject. She is a community chair of the Green Software Foundation, and co-founder of tech consultancy Strategically Green. She is also the author of the scifi Panopticon series.Sarah (Chun-Wei) Hsu strongly advocates green, sustainable software. She regularly speaks and writes on the subject and serves as the chair of the Green Software Course project for the Green Software Foundation. In collaboration with the Linux Foundation, the group recently launched a free online educational course titled Green Software for Practitioners (LFC131) to assist software practitioners in building and maintaining greener applications. She currently works as a Site Reliability Engineer on a distributed platform on Google Cloud.Sara Bergman is a Senior Software Engineer working as a backend engineer with people experiences in the Microsoft ecosystem. She is an advocate for green software practices and frequently speaks about green software publicly in conferences, meetups and podcasts. She is an individual contributor of the Green Software Foundation, where she has contributed to several projects, including the Software Carbon Intensity specification and the GSF newsletter.

This can opener is an easy, hands free tool, to use. It does open canned items efficiently, but slower than hand-turn openers, which saves a painful wrist motion from which I suffer. Unlike a traditional opener, this one cuts under the can edge which requires caution when removing the lid as exposed cut edges are very sharp. Also, the opener does not stop when it has completed its circuit. The start button has to be pressed to stop action.

Update: I've owned it a year now, still on original batteries (surprised me), it still works great. I still get a little annoyed with how slow it it, but might be time for new batteries. That said, it is much slower than a standard electric can opener, and you have no idea where it's cutting. Now I started on the first letter on the product's label, and pay attention to when the circle is complete. Press the "on" button a second time and it goes backwards for a few seconds. Done! Use the attached magnet to pull off the lid. I'm thinking of buying a second one. Also, I very much like that it uses standard batteries, nothing weird to look for. Well done!

Opener leaves wire threads on the rim of the can when opening. Poses a danger if ingested.

Purchased this item hoping it would make opening cans easier (I have osteoarthritis in my hands). First time I tried it, after it rounded the lid of a can of DelMonte green beans, nothing. I reseated it, and held it down when it started. It opened the can after circling the top two times. When I took the lid off the can, there were tiny wire "threads" stuck on the can, and more stuck on the Kitchen Mama opener. I was able to very carefully wipe the wire threads off and pour the can of beans into my pan. HOWEVER, I will not use this product again. Who wants to run the risk of ingesting wire threads?!!! I would return the product for a refund, but my husband destroyed the box opening it, so this will go into the garbage. I wouldn't sell at a garage sale or donate it, because someone else might ingest the wire threads, and then Kitchen Mama would have a lawsuit on their hands I wouldn't have given ANY stars, but you have to give at least one to write a review.

They followed up, honored the warranty, and sent me a replacement even though I couldn’t provide photos at the time. The replacement works perfectly and the experience was way less stressful than I expected. **** Original Review: I just needed a simple electric can opener because I have crippling pain in my hands and I can't use a manual one. I didn't expect anything fancy but for the one job this thing had it still really let me down. This thing is so slow it reminds me of my AOL days. And when it's done, it just... keeps going. When you turn it off it takes FOREVER to wind down. The first few times I tried yanking it off because I thought it was stuck. And then it fully died in under a year. But honestly maybe what bothers me the most of all is when I contacted customer support about the warranty replacement, I got an email back asking for photographic proof that my BATTERIES WERE IN CORRECTLY. Really? (A photo that I could not provide because it had broken days earlier and I threw it in the trash, who hoards broken appliances?). I really expected better from a ‘reputable’ brand.
