Briggs and Stratton Dual 200 Amp Split 400 Amp Automatic Transfer Switch

Service Entrance Rated, NEMA 3R, UL 1008 Listed

If your home has 400 amp service split across two 200 amp breaker panels, a standard transfer switch setup can get complicated fast. The Briggs and Stratton Dual 200A Split 400A Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is built specifically for that situation.

It is a 2 in 1 ATS system in a single enclosure that controls and supplies both 200A panels during an outage. It automatically detects a utility failure, starts the standby generator, and transfers power to keep your home running. When the utility comes back, it switches you back automatically.

This is the clean, code-friendly solution for split 400A homes that want true automatic backup without cobbling together two separate switches.

Built for split 400A services (two 200A panels)

Many larger homes have what is commonly called “split 400 amp service,” where the incoming utility feed is divided between two main distribution panels, each rated at 200 amps. You still have 400A service available, but it is split across two panels.

This transfer switch is designed around that exact layout:

  • Dual 200A transfer switching in one enclosure
  • Powers both panels during an outage
  • Replaces the need for two separate 200A transfer switches
  • Smaller footprint and simpler installation path than running two standalone ATS units

In short, it is the right switch for the right type of service.

Automatic operation that keeps the power on

A Briggs and Stratton transfer switch provides the “brain” your standby generator needs.

What it does automatically:

  • Senses loss of utility power
  • Sends the start signal to your generator
  • Transfers your home from utility power to generator power
  • Monitors utility restoration
  • Transfers your loads back to the utility once power is stable
  • Signals the generator to shut down

That means no dragging cords, no manual switching, and no guessing if the power is safe to transfer back.

Service Entrance Rated with Disconnect

This model is Service Entrance Rated with an integrated disconnect, giving installers flexibility when working with different panel configurations.

It is designed to support installations where the home has:

  • 200A panels with a main breaker
  • 200A panels without a main breaker

This is a big deal in split 400A setups, because service entrance rating and disconnect requirements can affect how the system gets permitted and wired.

Outdoor ready, code-friendly enclosure

  • NEMA 3R enclosure for indoor or outdoor use
  • UL 1008 listed for automatic transfer switches
  • Built for real world weather exposure and long-term reliability

For homeowners, that translates to confidence that it is built for the job and recognized by inspectors.

Key specs

  • Amperage: 2 x 200A (dual 200A switching for split 400A service)

  • Frequency: 60 Hz
  • Poles: 2 pole
  • Enclosure: NEMA 3R indoor/outdoor

Important requirement

This 2 in 1 transfer switch must be bundled with a Briggs and Stratton standby generator. It is designed as part of the Briggs and Stratton standby ecosystem so the controls and start/transfer behavior work correctly together.

Why this is the right choice for split 400A homes

  • Purpose-built for homes with two 200A distribution panels
  • One enclosure instead of two separate ATS boxes
  • Automatic start and transfer during outages
  • Service Entrance Rated disconnect flexibility
  • Weather rated NEMA 3R enclosure for outdoor installs
  • UL 1008 listed for code compliance and peace of mind

Not as good as I expected
When it first came, the box fell apart as I was taking it out, and a lot of some kind of dirt or sand kept falling out all over my table and floor. I had the take the entire thing apart and thoroughly wash it. After drying age reassembling it, I tried it on my portafilter that came with my Breville Barista Express, but, somehow, it doesn't always make the tamping level. You would think with the ridge that rests on the side of the portafilter that it would force it to remain level, but, somehow, it doesn't, at least not consistently. It also has varying lengths (heights, or depths), and a single spring tension, so you may still over tamping or under-tamp. I was expecting it would have a censor that would just detect once it reached 30 lbs of force and cut off after that, similar to a torque screwdriver, but that's not what this is. I'll still give it 3 stars because, despite the problems mentioned above, it at least produces some amount of consistency, even if that isn't measurable; but, I can't give it 5 stars because of those issues mentioned above.

This is the one.
Size: 58.3mm, Color: Black
As an el Supremo Coffee Geek, I've wasted money on lots of different tampers. Save your money and buy this one or it's equivalent. This thing is heavy duty, solid, well-made, self-leveling, tamps at 30 pounds and is fool-proof even for fools. Also, it's a palm tamper meaning more fun and more satisfying to use as you prep the puck for your morning buzz. Buy it. You will thank me.

Super easy to use and takes the guess-work out of getting even pressure on the grounds
Size: 58.3mm, Color: Black, Size: 58.3mm, Color: Black
I have been using a hand tamper for many years and have a good idea of the pressure I am applying to the grounds in the portafilter. I honestly considered spring tampers to be a bit silly. But this tamper really does take the guess-work out of pressing the coffee grounds. The shroud helps guide the press so that pressure is applied even and flat across the surface. With the manual tamper, there will be some play when pressing, or some unevenness in pressure. This is especially true when cranking out many espressos during a breakfast party with friends. Having the spring tamper makes quick work of turning out a lot of coffees with consistency. There are no instructions for taking this tamper apart to clean inside, and you may not really need to do that very often. After each use, just pull back the shroud (the black piece that moves up and down) and wipe off the tamper (the shiny steel part). This will help prevent grounds from working their way inside. If you do want to take it apart, it’s easy. Pull back the shroud and unscrew the tamper. It will come apart into three pieces. Wipe the pieces off and reassemble. Super quick and easy. This tamper is very heavy. My scale shows 656 g (about a pound and a half). It fits the portafilter exactly, with no slop. Just place on top of grounds and press!. Don’t even worry about pressure, just push down all the way. Overall I had fun using this tamper versus my manual one. And since I make myself a cappuccino very early in the morning, I don’t have to be very awake to get a good pack on the grounds and get my coffee fast!

It is heavy
Size: 58.3mm, Color: Black
Item was as described and shipped promptly. It is heavy and works well with my portafilter. I haven't had it long enough to really evaluate how helpful it is.
