This anthology of critical writing considers the sense of graphic design practices that follow from the desktop publishing ÒrevolutionÓ of the 1980s, by tracking a series of design's conjunctions with the following critical keywords: technology, the market, content, and modernism. This anthology locates texts outside the discipline of design which can help explicate some of designÕs guiding contemporary antagonisms, as well as texts from within the discipline that have set the terms for recent debates. These writings, considered as a collection, pursue the specificity of graphic design as a medium of critical enquiry and as an object for self-theorization, while also taking graphic design as itself presenting a series of case studies with which to open larger cultural and political questions.
