Gold is where you find it; the time-honored mantra of the weekend prospector to the seasoned professional; is at best only a half-truth. Gold is where the planet, through its myriad, inanimate geological processes, choose to leave it. The Dragon Tooth Gold Mine was no exception to the science underlying the geological process of gold deposition, however, only difficult to find microscopic gold on the surface masked the deposit from the greedy eyes of the early prospectors.

But it's not only "The Luck of the Irish" that brings the young Callahans to one of the richest gold mines in the Arizona Territories. Through the patience and perseverance of an Indian woman that Eli Callahan takes for his wife, the secrets of the red mountain are unveiled layer by layer. From gold pan to arrastra and sluice; to underground mining, stamp mills, and amalgam tables, the wealth of the Dragon Tooth Mine fuels the Federal money presses of the Civil War.

There is more in the mine than gold; the remains of dinosaurs that roamed the earth sixty-five million years ago also await for discovery. More than fossilized bones, the unique discovery fans the fires of news craven printing presses worldwide.

Destiny also finds the Callahans. Suzette completes her medical degree; Jacques joins the US Army as a scout; Roland becomes the family's financial manager, and Eli stays on the red mountain and mines the gold.

Historical fiction is the author’s technique to bring to light the thrill of discovery and the hardships of mining in the Arizona Territories in the mid 1800's. Action packed adventure and interaction with the historical figures of the times provides a unique insight into the men and women that shaped Arizona into the mining industry it enjoys to this day.

Ahead of their times, the Callahans continue the legacy of their father, building wealth and security through hard work, fair labor practice emancipating slaves, and sharing the wealth through shared ownership with their workers.

More adventure, more intrigue, the Dragon Tooth Gold Series continues moving through and beyond the Civil War years.

About the Author

Kent J. McGrew has taken a refreshing break from years of technical writing to bring his readers Dragon Tooth Gold; an epic historical fiction of gold mining in the American West. Born during WWII, McGrew was raised by immigrant grandparents in the Sacramento Valley. He was drawn into mining partnerships with his father at age fourteen where he discovered the science that should be the bulwark of every effort. After three mining venture failures, he attended the Montana School of Mines for degrees in Mineral Dressing Engineering, an odd corner of extractive metallurgy recovering minerals and metals from ores.

Five years in college for a B.S., three years in the US Army, and a year with a Teaching Fellowship for his M.S. Degree, were beneficial interruptions to a career that has spanned sixty years. Project work took him to every continent except Antarctica, where he literally missed the plane tour from New Zealand.

Under the pen name of Auntie GEM (Government, Education & Mining), he wrote weekly articles about the history and current events of gold mining in the Black Hills. Three years of anti-mining initiatives during the South Dakota general elections kept him busy writing and speaking on tours around the state. His work appeared weekly in the Lead Daily Call, and spread to every weekly newspaper in the Dakotas.

Over the years, McGrew has unmasked a wide variety of mining scams. His Five Axioms of Mining Scams, published in 1994, are still widely quoted and woven into the fabric of Dragon Tooth Gold.

The mining vagabond settled in Congress, Arizona twenty-eight years ago when he met Sally—a woman he couldn’t pass up—his gold fever cured forever with this amazing find.

Kent continues to mentor and teach both children and adults, sharing science, math, and mining; avoiding the perils and pitfalls of retirement.

Nice quality for a good price
Color: Luminous watch black face
Bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas. He loves it! Nice coloring, looks like the pictures. Fits nicely and comfortably once the size was adjusted. He did have some difficulty in sizing it - the little tool provided could’ve been of better quality to make this process easier but it did the job.

3/5 Stars – Looks far more expensive than it is
Color: Luminous watch black face, Color: Luminous watch black face
The OLEVS 5885 is about what you’d expect from a ~$30 watch, but in a good way. I bought it knowing it wasn’t going to compete with higher-end brands, and with that expectation in mind I’ve actually been pretty impressed. The biggest standout is the appearance. This watch looks far nicer than its price point would suggest. I get compliments on it fairly regularly from both friends and random people who assume it cost much more than it did. If you’re looking for something stylish on a budget, it definitely delivers in that department. Functionally, it does its job well enough. It keeps time reliably and hasn’t given me any real issues there. The glass/crystal is also surprisingly durable. I’ve worn this watch quite a bit, and while the rest of the case and bezel have picked up scratches over time, the face itself has held up extremely well. Another pleasant surprise is the bezel. It’s functional and unidirectional, with strong, clear, tactile clicks. It feels solid and hasn’t loosened up with use. That said, the cheaper elements do show up if you look closely. The bezel markings are pretty cheap and scratch easily. Also, the small lume marker at the 12:00 position on the bezel fell out during the second week of owning the watch. Overall though, I’m quite happy with it. For the price, it looks much more high-end than it really is, and I can comfortably use it as an everyday tool watch without worrying about babying it like a luxury piece.

Good cheap watch. Watch band could be better
Color: Luminous watch black face
The timepiece itself is use of decent quality and is perfectly acceptable for everyday use. I'm pretty rough on my watches and this watch fits the bill as I go about my daily routine. It keeps good time and has a good looking face. It seems many have trouble with the watch band sizing. The arrows on the inside of the watch band show the direction the pins should be pushed out. The pins stick out ever so slightly on one side or the other of the watch band giving the band a rough feel. I used a soft nail file and polished the pins smooth. The watch band feels much better afterwards. I would buy it again and recommend the watch to anyone looking for a cheap timepiece.
