A sweeping history of the drama, intrigue, and rivalry behind the creation of the postwar economic order

When turmoil strikes world monetary and financial markets, leaders invariably call for 'a new Bretton Woods' to prevent catastrophic economic disorder and defuse political conflict. The name of the remote New Hampshire town where representatives of forty-four nations gathered in July 1944, in the midst of the century's second great war, has become shorthand for enlightened globalization. The actual story surrounding the historic Bretton Woods accords, however, is full of startling drama, intrigue, and rivalry, which are vividly brought to life in Benn Steil's epic account.

Upending the conventional wisdom that Bretton Woods was the product of an amiable Anglo-American collaboration, Steil shows that it was in reality part of a much more ambitious geopolitical agenda hatched within President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Treasury and aimed at eliminating Britain as an economic and political rival. At the heart of the drama were the antipodal characters of John Maynard Keynes, the renowned and revolutionary British economist, and Harry Dexter White, the dogged, self-made American technocrat. Bringing to bear new and striking archival evidence, Steil offers the most compelling portrait yet of the complex and controversial figure of White--the architect of the dollar's privileged place in the Bretton Woods monetary system, who also, very privately, admired Soviet economic planning and engaged in clandestine communications with Soviet intelligence officials and agents over many years.

A remarkably deft work of storytelling that reveals how the blueprint for the postwar economic order was actually drawn, The Battle of Bretton Woods is destined to become a classic of economic and political history.

Great, comfortable jeans.
Special Size: Low Stretch, Size: 34W x 30L, Color: Dark Midnight Wash
Great jeans! They're relaxed, but not loose or super baggy, so they still look great. I got the dark wash and you can wear them as dressy jeans or just casual out and about. I have bigger thighs and the 34x30 fits perfectly with room still to spare and not constricting at all. Whether it's walking around a lot, or sitting down for hours, it's very comfortable. We'll see how long they last but I washed them once already and are holding up. The length is good as well. When I don't have shoes I probably need a belt or could've ordered 29 length, but they're fine when I have shoes on. They don't slip down at all. Especially for the price compared to Levi's or others that cost 40, 50, or even $60 this is a great deal.

If you’re on the fence read this
Special Size: Low Stretch, Size: 40W x 30L, Color: Iced Light Wash, Special Size: Low Stretch, Size: 40W x 30L, Color: Iced Light Wash
In all honesty, I was skeptical about ordering jeans from Amazon. I’ve always bought my jeans in stores, but I figured I’d give it a shot. I ordered these jeans for an upcoming outdoor wedding because I wanted something lighter and thinner. They showed up today, and I threw them on. They fit great, feel good and comfortable, and they don’t look cheap. I’ll mainly be using these for outings, so I can’t really attest to the durability as far as working in them, but I’d still suggest them. For reference, I’m 5’8” and 230 lbs with a husky build—kind of fit, kind of fat.

A Great Buy - But Might Be Too Long
Special Size: Low Stretch, Size: 34W x 32L, Color: Dark Midnight Wash
These jeans are an excellent buy! I have only bought Eddie Bauer jeans for the last 25 years, but this time I couldn't find my size in the correct style. I prefer classic/relaxed in dark blue. I don't like the "pre-washed" or worn look. The Dark Midnight Wash was exactly what I wanted - new jeans. The waist measurement was perfect. Unfortunately, the 32 length was waaay too long. (All the Eddie Bauers were 34x32). So I just did an exchange for a 34x30, which should be good. Eventhough the length was too long, I'm still giving 5 stars. Different manufacturers cut sizes differently. It is what it is. And the return process was EZ and the replacement size was in stock. Seriously, there is really no quality difference between these Amazon Essential jeans and my old $60 E.B.s No one sees the label anyway!
