Backstory
A few years ago, Bryan and I had a talk both concluding that we wanted to do a project together when the time was right. About 2 1/2 years ago I sent him a simple 2 view sketch with a baseline CAD model and instantly we both knew that airplane is going to be the one. With the assistance of Alex Safarik, I had many conversations with him about the effects of certain aerodynamics pieces where Alex was able to perfectly translate those ideas onto the design. After getting some feedback from Bryan, the final changes were made and the design was ready to be made.
Design
The Apollo is a brand new design from the ground up that is meant to win. Over the span of a few months, I wanted to ensure that the balance was perfect while having every possible advantage, whether it is being flown for preliminaries at a local contest or unknowns in the finals at a world championship. Every part of this airplane has a purpose and is one of the most thought out designs available in the current market. With performance being the primary inspiration of this design for me, it was equally important to make the airplane beautiful as mixing these two is very hard to do right.
Here are a few points addressed while completing this design .
- Goal - Create a timeless, balanced monoplane design that suits many flyingstyles, setups, wind conditions, and sequences better than any existing plane on the market. It is very important that the pilot becomes one with his airplane to succeed in competition, and the Apollo is the plane that will take one to that next level.
- Scheme - The Apollo itself is a canvas of unlimited possibilities where one's personal touch will always look beautiful. The stock scheme lays out a great baseline of high visibility in the air (regardless of the color selection) while not being too busy on the eyes.
- Design Elements - We wanted to be able to incorporate every useful aerodynamic element into the airplane to take advantage of a fully composite structure. As seen in the photos, small elements have been added to both help clean up dirty air on certain parts of the plane and help maximize knife edge capabilities, which helps significantly across all aspects of flight.
With all of these elements, experience, and the drive to win, CK Aero and I have the passion for perfection and are using this opportunity to let you experience it with us.
