Joseph Arthur was well aware of the expectations and potential pitfalls of recording a Lou Reed tribute album. It wasn't even his idea. When it was pitched to him by Vanguard A&R man Bill Bentley in November 2013, mere weeks after Reed's death, he only very reluctantly agreed to consider the idea. Reed had befriended the New York-based Arthur in the mid-'90s just as his career was beginning to blossom with release of his 1997 debut on Peter Gabriel's Real World label (Reed even took him out for ice cream after signing to celebrate the feat). Sixteen years and ten albums later, a tour-hardened veteran Arthur returned home after weeks on the road to attend his friend's final tribute show at the Apollo Theater and decided to try out a few songs at his home studio using only acoustic guitar and piano. Taking a simplistic approach to Reed's songs was the only way to make this album work. Reed's best music was subtle in that way with phrases and arrangements boiled down to their minimalist essence. He often made huge statements with his understatement and unwavering attitude. Bravely taking on some of the best-known cuts from Reed's canon, Arthur strips songs like "Heroin," "Satellite of Love," and even "Walk on the Wild Side" down, interpreting them honestly and organically with his expressive, embattled voice. There is obvious respect and reverence for the material and for Reed's style, but Arthur is also his own artist with a great body of work and years of touring to his credit. He manages to get lost in these familiar songs without becoming too subservient to their original versions or feeling the need to veer too far from them in order to make his statement. His versions of "Sword of Damocles," "Coney Island Baby," and "Dirty Blvd." are all tactfully handled, receiving more of a wistful reinterpretation than a showboating reinvention. A less experienced artist might not have been so reserved, but the veteran Arthur knows how to treat a song, whether it be his own material or something as iconic as the Velvet Underground's "Stephanie Says." As a tribute, Lou is deftly made and should please, or at the very least fail to offend, Lou Reed fans. As a Joseph Arthur album, it's a nice comedown from 2013's massive, lushly produced double album the Ballad of Boogie Christ.

Great Water Bottle but failed after one year.
Color: Foggy Tide, Size: 32 Ounces
I purchased this Owala water bottle a little over a year ago and it was in my top favorites. The flip-up lid is a great feature, and I like that you can use it with or without the straw. It’s completely leak-proof, comfortable to carry, and has held up well with daily use. My only complaint had been that it doesn’t fit in most standard cup holders.
But after about a year, I did notice that it stopped keeping my water cold as long as it used to, and the ice began melting much faster. I reached out to Owala customer service but unfortunately never received a response.
Even with that issue, I still prefer the lid design over brands like Yeti or RTIC, so I would consider purchasing another Owala in the future. If you value a convenient, leak-proof lid design, it’s definitely worth considering. I just sincerely hope the insulation lasts longer on the next one.

The BEST water bottle on the market!
Color: Denim, Size: 32 Ounces
I am in love with this water bottle! I take it everywhere with me, and I love that it has a built-in straw. The color is perfect as well. It motivates me to get my water intake in, and it helps me meet my fitness goals. It is easily washed in the dishwasher, and I don't have to worry about it breaking. It keeps the temperature of my water perfect- whether I add ice or not. It is sturdy but not too heavy.

Excellent Summer Resource for Kids!
Format: Paperback
I purchased the "Summer Bridge Activities 2nd to 3rd Grade Workbook" for my 8-year-old, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way. This comprehensive workbook is a fantastic tool to keep children engaged and learning during the summer break. My sibling is an elementary school teacher and introduced me to these books when my son was in Kindergarten and I honestly have not looked back. My LO loved a good challenge so we typically do multiple days to ensure we finish it in its entirety during the summer. I'm constantly recommending these books every summer as I have not yet found anything to replace it.
Content Quality:
The workbook covers all essential subjects: math, reading comprehension, writing, science, social studies, and even fitness. Each section is well-organized and filled with age-appropriate activities that challenge and entertain. The variety of exercises ensures that my child doesn't get bored, and the progressive difficulty helps build confidence.
Educational Value:
The math and reading comprehension sections are particularly strong, with clear explanations and plenty of practice problems. The writing prompts encourage creativity and critical thinking, while the science and social studies sections introduce interesting facts and concepts. I appreciate the inclusion of fitness activities, promoting a healthy lifestyle alongside academic learning.
Flash Cards:
The included flash cards are a wonderful bonus. They are durable, colorful, and perfect for quick review sessions. My child enjoys using them, and they make reinforcing concepts fun and interactive.
Ease of Use:
The workbook is user-friendly with clear instructions for both parents and kids. It's designed to be self-paced, which means my child can work independently or with minimal guidance. The answer key at the back is helpful for quick checks.
Engagement:
What sets this workbook apart is its ability to make learning enjoyable. The activities are engaging, and the themes are relevant and interesting. My child looks forward to workbook time each day, which is a huge win for any parent trying to prevent the summer slide.
Overall, the "Summer Bridge Activities 2nd to 3rd Grade Workbook" is an excellent investment in your child's education. It's thorough, fun, and well-designed to keep young minds sharp over the summer. I highly recommend it to any parent looking to provide a balanced and enriching educational experience during the school break.

Good quality for price
Format: Paperback
This was a good book for the summer. It has a variety of activities so my child didn't get bored. It also has some fun "outside" only ideas to get them up and moving. It was a good bridge book that she could (mostly) do independently. However, as they progress through it, parents should be there to help and reiterate different concepts. It was well worth the price and helped the transition go smoothly.

Perfect To Keep A Youngster's Mind Active Over The Summer
Format: Paperback
Simply put, this is a great activity book to help your child stay mentally active when out of school for the summer. It is not intended to be a full school curriculum, but instead a way to keep children mentally active during the summer break. We have a child leaving 2nd and heading to 3rd grade and were concerned about her skills being lost over the summer. While we do work with her to increase her skillset, we were more concerned about the atrophy that happens when not in school than jumping her ahead. It can be a bit tough for kids returning to school if they go 2-3 months with little book work, so we wanted to help keep her fresh but not fill her summer with full days of 'school' work.
This book is a solid mix of skills with some being easy and others more of stretch. The easy and stretch items will vary with the schooling your child gets and their abilities. I suspect most kids heading to third grade will find most of the work in this book at least a strong refresher and potentially help move them in some areas. This is setup to be a roughly 15 minute daily regime but we have enhanced it with some other work. We have math and science specific activity books as well as a reading workbook that we rotate into the mix. We also keep track of words she has a harder time spelling and use them make a 10 spelling word weekly review and test (review for 4 days and test on the fifth). Most of these topics are in the bridge activities book, but we felt a little extra attention would not hurt and some variety in what she is working on keeps things fresh. We do spelling, reading/writing and a couple 'pages' of work each weekday which comes out to about a 45-60 minute batch of work. The Summer Bridge Activities books is a constant in the mix with a page used almost every day and the other work rotated.
