Alluaudia procera “Ocotillo” is a striking, drought-tolerant succulent native to Madagascar, often mistaken for the North American Ocotillo due to its similar upright, spiny form. This tall, columnar plant features long, spiny stems lined with small, round, deciduous green leaves that emerge during the growing season and drop off in dry periods. The architectural shape and dramatic silhouette of Alluaudia procera make it a standout in xeriscapes or succulent gardens. Despite its tough appearance, it is relatively easy to grow in full sun with excellent drainage and minimal watering. In warm climates, it can grow quite tall—up to 30 feet in the ground—but remains more modest in pots.
