Artisan Profile

A nonprofit organization located in Panajachel, a small town on Lake Atitlan in the western highlands of Guatemala, is dedicated to connecting 120 indigenous artisans from the surrounding area to international markets. Through Fair Trade programs, they empower women artisans, their families, and their communities to strengthen their entrepreneurial ecosystems. The foundation leverages traditional Maya heritage and art to rescue, preserve and promote the ancestral culture of the highland artisans with a focus on backstrap weaving. By earning a fair price for their work, the artisans are able to provide sustenance, medical care and education to their children and contribute economically in their communities.

The textiles are entirely produced on traditional backstrap looms, which have been in use since the time of the Mayan empire. This highly specialized weaving technique has been passed down for generations and produces intricate, durable textiles.

Relevant to the present day.
Format: Paperback
Joseph Stalin makes the concepts of dialectical and historical materialism accessible to the lay-person in this work. It's short, but dense and does a good job of explaining why the communist party of the 1920s and 1930s chose to pursue the policies they did. A fascinating insight into the fundamental world-view of a controversial world figure. Only 44 pages, but you will likely reread it several times in order to truly internalize its messaging. Thankful to the seller for making this essay available as the works of polarizing political figures are often censored, suppressed or outright banned in many places. The English translation does a fine job of conveying the original essay written in Russian.

This is a supplemental reading to assist with your understanding of dialectical materialism. I strongly suggest you read this with Socialism: Scientific and Utopian by Engels if you wish to have a conceptual understanding of dialectical materialism without going through massive tomes by other authors. Stalin writes fairly straightforward, and he covers a basic introduction of what dialectical and historical materialism are and how they work.
