Blackmagic Design Cable DeckLink HD Extreme 3

The Blackmagic Design Cable DeckLink HD Extreme 3 is the primary breakout cable for the DeckLink HD Extreme 3 (and 3D) PCIe cards. It is an "octopus-style" loom that converts a single high-density multi-pin connector on the card into 14 independent industry-standard connectors. This allows the card to interface with a vast array of professional and legacy broadcast equipment.

Connectivity & Connector List

This cable is designed to provide comprehensive analog and digital I/O. The 14 connectors typically include:

  • Analog Video (BNC): * Component In/Out: (Y, B-Y, R-Y) for high-quality analog capture and monitoring from decks like Betacam SP.

    • Composite/S-Video: Shared through the component connectors for legacy SD equipment.

  • Analog Audio (XLR): * 2 x XLR Inputs: Balanced professional audio input (Left/Right).

    • 2 x XLR Outputs: Balanced professional audio output (Left/Right).

  • Digital Audio (BNC):

    • AES/EBU Input: For lossless digital audio ingestion.

    • AES/EBU Output: For digital audio monitoring and mastering.

  • Reference (BNC):

    • Ref Input: Supports Black Burst and Tri-Sync for locking the card to a house clock in multi-device studio environments.

  • Deck Control (RS-422): * A 9-pin D-sub connector used for frame-accurate control of VTRs. This enables "Capture from Tape" and "Edit to Tape" workflows directly from DaVinci Resolve or other NLEs.

Key Features

  • Single-Port Integration: Uses a high-density DB-44 (or similar serial multi-pin) connector to clear up the back of the PC, keeping the card profile slim while offering massive connectivity.

  • Professional Shielding: Each lead is individually shielded to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI) between the analog audio and high-bandwidth video signals.

  • Color-Coded Labels: Every connector is clearly labeled at the neck of the plug, which is vital for patching in the dark, cramped spaces behind server racks.

Compatibility

  • Primary Hardware: Specifically built for the DeckLink HD Extreme 3 and DeckLink HD Extreme 3D.

  • Legacy Support: While the DeckLink HD Extreme series has been succeeded by the DeckLink 4K and 8K lines, this cable remains a critical spare for facilities maintaining 2K or HD legacy ingest workstations.

Operational Insight

The DeckLink HD Extreme 3 was famous for being one of the first cards to offer 3 Gb/s SDI and HDMI alongside full analog I/O. Because the card is capable of switching instantly between SD, HD, and 2K film formats, this breakout cable is the hardware "key" that allows that flexibility.

In modern workflows, this cable is most frequently used to digitize archives. If you are tasking a workstation with high-quality ingest from a Sony HDCAM or Betacam deck, the RS-422 control and the balanced XLR audio on this cable are what ensure the capture is frame-accurate and broadcast-legal.

Technical Note: If you are missing this cable, ensure you purchase the "HD Extreme 3" version specifically. While it looks similar to the DeckLink Studio breakout cable, the pinouts are different. Using the wrong cable can result in no signal or, in rare cases, electrical damage to the audio output stages of the card.

The Air & Space Museum is a national treasure.
Format: Hardcover
This is one of those books that makes you wish you were there. Lots of pictures and tidbits of information. A good quality book physically as well. We get their magazine and this is one of many books we have both from and about the museum. Highly Recommended.

Great photo essay, history of aviation and space
i'm an engineer- worked rocket motors, and various satellite programs. this book was recommended by associate after visiting the museum at Langley. The pics are super, with short descriptions, and moderate on the tech. It's an amazing pulse of this wild history, and mostly is from America's lineage. St. Louis, Mercury, Atlas, and up to current Shuttle. There's also the SST, and unique turn of the century early birds. A fine read to be shared with a youngster (my son 10, digs it), or for the history or engineering buff. amazon has it cheaper than at the museum.

Essential reading for PowerPoint presenters.
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Cliff shows details how to improve our PowerPoint presentations. He gives concrete and simple steps to transform a message into a targeted presentation. All of us have suffered from presenters who went over their allotted time because they had vital information to give us, yet we still didn't know their main point. Many have seen slide decks burdened with dozens of bullet points. Did the volume of points yield more clarity or did they dull our ability to focus on the message? Probably not. Read Cliff's book. Follow his method and you'll be a more effective presenter.

Useful with some scientific corroboration
Format: Paperback
Worth it as a primer to slide content and how it inter-relates to the delivery when giving a presentation. Very slightly laboured, like most TV documentaries nowadays - you feel they could move a bit faster (...yeah we got it the first time).
