Description

SuperLux: Smart Light Art, Design & Architecture for Cities by Davina Jackson is a visually arresting and intellectually rich exploration of how light is transforming cities around the world. Published by Thames & Hudson, this A4-sized volume investigates the convergence of art, technology, and architecture in creating dynamic, interactive, and energy-efficient urban environments.

The book showcases over 50 global projects that span illuminated bridges, responsive facades, light festivals, public installations, and smart architectural lighting schemes. From Sydney’s Vivid Festival to Tokyo’s urban LEDs and European light biennales, Jackson delves into how artists, architects, and technologists are reimagining the urban nightscape.

Structured around themes such as innovation, sustainability, and spectacle, each project is documented with vibrant photography and supported by insightful commentary. Jackson contextualises these works within the broader discourse of smart cities, environmental design, and experiential public space.

SuperLux is not just a catalogue of lighting design — it’s a celebration of how smart light can engage communities, elevate architecture, and redefine how we experience cities after dark. With contributions from international design studios and cultural organisations, the book is both inspirational and instructive.

Ideal for architects, lighting designers, urban planners, cultural curators, and anyone passionate about future-forward city aesthetics, SuperLux illuminates the path toward smarter, more beautiful urban design.

Interesting book, dull period
Format: Paperback
As a Marxist historian, Hobsbawm sees the world at this time, as well as the modern world, as a playground for the forces of capitalism. He apologizes for taking a eurocentric approach to world history, while acknowledging that Europe largely determined the course of world events during this period. In spite of the title, there actually isn't much discussion of colonial empires; Hobsbawm seems more interested in how the Age of Empire affected the rulers more than the ruled. His Marxist sympathies are in evidence and at times make his conclusions a bit predictable, but some of his cultural critiques are quite brilliant. The chapter on the dilemmas posed by modern science is exceptional. Reading a book like this seems to me much more interesting than actually living in this period would have been.
