artist biography
Sven Alfred Otto Deurell was born July 7, 1904 in Stockholm. He was a Swedish painter.
Deurell studied at Valand's målarskola (painting school) in Gothenburg under Tor Bjurström, followed by further study at the Konstakademinand (Art Academy) in Stockholm. He was a contemporary of several of the famous Gothenburg colourists including Ivan Ivarsson, Ragnar Sandberg and Inge Schiöler.
He painted lyrically depicted landscapes from Sweden including Halland and Öland and scene from France. He was a very sensitive colourist in an impressionistic style, his work are often simply and summarily structured. He reduced the drawing to a minimum and concentrated on describing his subjects with the inherent power of colours. He painted some public art pieces including murals at the Karolinska hospital in Solna.
Examples of his work are held in public collections including the the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the Norrköping Art Museum.
Deurell passed away at the age of 62 on May 20, 1967 in Paris.
