They were not strangers but citizens. The British Nationality Act of that same year made it law: every Commonwealth subject had the right to live and work in the mother country. Britain had asked. The buses needed drivers. The hospitals needed nurses. The factories needed hands. So they came — from Barbados, Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica — by the tens of thousands over the next two decades. They built the NHS. They drove the trains. They raised children on streets that posted signs reading No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs. This is the Windrush Generation. They are why Brixton sounds the way it does. Why Notting Hill Carnival exists. Why British music, British food, British identity itself was rewritten from the bass up. Our identity has bled over all that is British. We are Britain. In 2018 the British government — having quietly destroyed their landing cards — tried to deport them. Their own children. The country fought back and scandal stands as proof: a generation that built a nation, and a nation that tried to forget what it owed them.
