Unlock scalable storage with the Microchip Adaptec 12Gb/s SAS Expander Card. The 82885T SAS expander card offers a scalable connectivity / fan-out option for additional drives when used in conjunction with a SAS RAID adapter or SAS HBA. This device is designed to maximize drive density in servers and storage enclosures, delivering a reliable path to expand your storage footprint without sacrificing performance. Built for enterprise environments, the 82885T combines a compact MD2 low-profile form factor with robust SAS technology to help IT teams scale storage capacity efficiently and cost-effectively.

Whether you're expanding a growing data center, upgrading a storage array, or implementing a dense server chassis, this SAS expander provides a flexible solution for connecting more disks to your existing SAS controller. The card's architecture focuses on delivering high-speed 12Gb/s SAS connectivity, broad compatibility with SAS HBAs and RAID adapters, and a design that fits into standard rack and blade servers. With the 82885T, you gain a scalable path to more storage throughput, better data availability, and improved storage management across your enterprise.

  • 36-port SAS/SATA expansion in a compact MD2 low-profile form factor, providing scalable connectivity and fan-out to add drives when paired with a compatible SAS RAID adapter or SAS HBA. This is ideal for dense storage configurations in servers and enclosures.
  • Up to 20 internal ports for direct-attached drives, enabling high-density drive layouts within constrained chassis spaces while maintaining clean cable management and airflow.
  • 12Gb/s SAS performance on each link, delivering strong throughput when connected to a capable SAS controller, SAS backplane, or storage enclosure, and maintaining compatibility with older SAS speeds as needed.
  • Flexible expansion capabilities that support daisy-chaining and scalable growth of storage arrays, allowing you to extend capacity as your data grows without replacing the entire controller stack.
  • Enterprise-grade reliability and compatibility, designed to work with a wide range of SAS RAID adapters and HBAs, supporting SAS and SATA devices and delivering a proven, field-tested expansion solution for data-center storage needs.

Technical Details of Microchip Adaptec 12Gb/s SAS Expander Card

  • Model: 82885T SAS Expander Card
  • Form factor: MD2 low-profile
  • Port count: 36 total ports; up to 20 internal ports
  • Data rate: 12Gb/s SAS per link; backward compatible with slower SAS interfaces
  • Host interface: PCIe (typical implementation uses a PCIe x4 connection)
  • Device support: SAS and SATA drives via standard SAS expander pathways
  • Application: Expands connectivity for SAS RAID adapters and SAS HBAs to increase drive density in servers and storage enclosures

How to Install Microchip Adaptec 12Gb/s SAS Expander Card

  • Power down the server, unplug it from power, and discharge any static electricity before handling internal components.
  • Open the chassis and locate an available PCIe slot suitable for a low-profile MD2 card; remove the slot cover if necessary and ensure clearance for the expander's connectors.
  • Insert the 82885T SAS Expander Card firmly into the PCIe slot and secure the card with the appropriate screw or mounting bracket to ensure a stable connection.
  • Connect the SAS cables from your SAS RAID controller or HBA to the expander card according to your hardware configuration. Follow the controller’s documentation to attach the expander to the proper external or internal ports and route cables for optimal airflow and minimal cable clutter.
  • Power on the server and install any required firmware updates or drivers from Microchip/Adaptec as guided by the operating system or RAID controller software. Verify that the expander is recognized by the host controller utility and that all connected drives are detected.
  • Configure your storage environment using your RAID controller’s management software. Assign drives, verify link status, and ensure proper redundancy and performance settings for your array. Monitor the system for stable operation and confirm that all paths are functioning as expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Question: What is the primary purpose of the Adaptec 82885T SAS Expander?

Answer: It provides scalable SAS/SATA expansion, enabling more drives to be connected to a SAS RAID controller or HBA. This expands drive density and connectivity in storage environments while preserving high-speed SAS performance.

  • Question: How many drives can I connect with this expander?

Answer: The design supports 36 ports in total, with up to 20 internal ports available for direct-attached drives, allowing substantial density in compact server and enclosure configurations.

  • Question: Is SATA support included?

Answer: Yes. The expander is designed to work with SAS and SATA devices through standard SAS expander pathways, enabling flexible use with a mix of SAS and SATA drives where supported by the host controller and backplane.

  • Question: What host interface does this card use?

Answer: The card interfaces with the host system via PCIe (typical implementations use a PCIe x4 connection), allowing compatibility with many server motherboards and storage controllers.

  • Question: Do I need any special firmware or drivers?

Answer: You may need firmware updates or drivers for your SAS controller or management software to ensure optimal performance and reliability. Always check Microchip/Adaptec support resources for the latest firmware, driver packages, and compatibility notes before deployment.

Just What I Needed for My Home Office
Color: Black
I’ve been very happy with this office chair. It was straightforward to assemble, feels sturdy, and offers excellent support for long hours at my desk. The adjustable lumbar support, armrests, and headrest make it easy to customize for a comfortable fit, and the mesh design helps keep the chair breathable throughout the day. Overall, this chair is comfortable, ergonomic, and a great value for a home office setup.

OK for basic Office chair
Color: Black
Positives:Comfortable chair, decent lumbar support. Negatives: no height adjustment for seat or tilt. Handles spin to sides with the slightest touch. Will try to figure out how to securehandles in place. Period good entry level office chair, should have ordered more of an upgraded chair.

Great daily chair
Color: Black, Color: Black
This is a great chair and very comfortable. I'm hard on fabrics and the material is excellent for me. I didn't think I would like the headrest (because I've never had one), however, I enjoy it's use at times. The wheels roll very easily and the seat height is perfect. The seat is easy to keep clean. I've had this chair for 3 months with daily use and it looks brand new. I would buy this chair again.

Cheaply made but functional
Color: Black
Pros: The headrest is highly adjustable. Even if you're tall you'll likely be able to tilt it so that you can rest your head on it while reclining. The instructions for putting it together are easy to follow. It's perfectly serviceable as a desk chair with no glaring defects. The mesh material keeps your body cool and dry even when sitting in it all day. Cons It's obviously very lightweight and cheaply made. This does make the chair easier to move, but this doesn't really feel like a $180 chair at all. More like a $120 or even $100 chair. The chair back is attached to the chair seat by a plastic bracket. Nearly every desk chair I've had in the past has had their back attached to the bottom with a metal bracket, and even those start to bend out of shape after a year or so. While reclining a good portion of your weight will be resting on this plastic bracket, and I simply cannot see this cheap plastic lasting for very long supporting anyone's body weight over a long period of time. If you buy this chair, make sure to get the warranty. The armrests are closer together than on most chairs, which creates a claustrophobic feeling of being squeezed by them. You get used to it eventually, and you can just put the armrests up if you want to, but a way to adjust the armrest width would have been nice. The lumbar support doesn't really do anything at all. It only presses against my back at the most intense setting, and even then not very much. There is no incremental recline setting. Either you are fully reclined, or sitting fully upright. Luckily the full recline setting is about perfect for me, but for a $180 chair you'd expect a bit more settings here.
