Fire Opal is an inspired, colorful ambient debut release by electronic artist Massergy (aka Eric Jensen) on the Spotted Peccary Music label. Featuring expressive instrumentations and lush resonant textures, this unique, saturated work was recorded and mixed entirely outdoors in all weather conditions and crafted with exclusively analog hardware, keyboards, and guitars. Fire Opal embraces the imperfections and sound anomalies of this technique, lending an authenticity to this non-conventional diverse sound voyage. Visually, the music may resemble firefly tracers in a dark forest, or a warm crackling fire that shoots sparks of electricity into the night sky, breathing life into the Mexican folklore of the Fire Opal, a stone that is said to have mystical powers of healing and protection. The album's musical theme was inspired by a Mexican ceremony called "Velada" - a psychedelic healing ritual performed by Mazatec Indian doctors and healers referred to as "curanderas". The purpose of a Velada is to break the boundaries of our perception in order to commune with gods, spirits and divine beings, and reveal profound visions, to ultimately achieve healing and knowledge. Massergy does just that with Fire Opal, suggesting a larger narrative outside oneself, where each musical thread is a different stop along a life journey adorned with a stone that is so very magical.
