“Fill in the Blanks” was written as an assignment for an online course I was taking from Andrew McLuhan on his grandfather Marshall McLuhan’s 1964 book Understanding Media. Chapter Two of the book is titled “Media Hot and Cold,” and I figured a light-hearted song might be a good medium for the message.
I recorded the “low def” version on my four track cassette machine back in 2024, and then the Emergency worked up our full-band take this past winter. We tried to give it a “Joe Walsh goes for a beer with Steve Miller on Portland Street” feel.
