Palo santo oil comes from wood of the Bursera graveolens tree, which grows in the dry tropical forests of South America - primarily Ecuador, Peru and Brazil.
The wood is aromatic because the tree produces a fragrant resin with a unique combination of organic compounds (several terpenes) that combine to create its sensual, woody aroma.
What Makes Palo Santo Special?
The name "palo santo" translates to "holy wood" in Spanish.
Traditionally, shamans and other healers burn burn palo santo wood during various religious ceremonies and rituals for purification, its smoke believed to be useful for eliminating negative energies and promoting healing.
It is also commonly used during meditation.
Palo santo has been found to promote relaxation, improve mental focus and enhance creativity. It also possesses some anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
Palo Santo Oil Requires Years of Seasoning
It is very important that palo santo wood be harvested sustainably. Once the tree dies of natural causes - at age 50 to 70 years - it must be left for a minimum of 5 to 8 years on the forest floor to allow for maturation of the natural oils.
Skilled foresters tag the downed tree, noting its age and often planting a sapling beside its fallen elder. Only after these long years of proper "seasoning" is the wood harvested for use, including extraction of this very special oil.
