Elizabeth Kelley’s recent work is the culmination of her lifelong exploration of the the islands off what is now called Cape Porpoise Maine where her family has been for 101 years. Her paintings and drawings are meditations on impermanence and reverence for our earth, often in the form of observational abstraction. Through the process of painting her aim is to continue to open in conscious exchange with these lands, to listen and act in right relationship with them. Her work has been exhibited in New England and California and has been collected nationally. She is a juried member of the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit, Maine and a past juried member of the Los Angeles Art Association. She is the Senior Artist with Cape Porpoise Archaeological Alliance where her drawing has contributed to the archaeological record. She received her MFA in painting from University of New Hampshire (2013), an MSW from University of New England (2002) and a BFA from MassArt (1989).

Magic Finds You
Sit long enough in the woods on an island and the magic finds you. Under the vibrant canopy of witch hazel and maple, over months I returned to this spot, synching to the pace of the woods above the tideline. And the slow dance unfolded. Light, color and shapes taking root. With each return the sensing got deeper. I don’t know what this sense is called. The noticing started within me, then feeling into the earth I was sitting on, sensing with the nearby plants and trees. We would take joy together at the cedar waxwing call, the ant, the hawk, the breeze and the young deer startling herself when she looked up to see us there. Painting and deep belonging in wildness.
