Restrictions in the exhaust system robs horsepower and torque especially on turbocharged cars.  Thus, removing as much exhaust flow restrictions will increase horsepower and torque significantly.  The factory catalytic converter found in the factory downpipe is a big culprit of this and is a major exhaust flow restriction. The factory catalytic converter is made up of catalyst material formed into "honeycomb" weaves. Exhaust gas must pass through these tiny "honeycomb" weaves on their way to the exhaust system thus causing a major exhaust flow restriction. It also causes turbulence after the catalytic converter which causes the exhaust flow to slow down (which increases restriction). By replacing the factory downpipe/catalytic converter with our Sports Series 4" High Flow Metallic Catted Downpipe, more power is unleashed! 

The factory catalytic uses a 900 cell ceramic core. What the 900 cells means is that per every inch, there are 900 "cells" that the exhaust gas must pass through. We use a 200 cell metallic core. By having less cells per square inch, these individual "cells" are bigger in size thus allowing exhaust gas to pass through it more easily. Thus, the lower the cell count, the higher the flow. Higher flow = more power, faster turbo spool up (less turbocharger lag) and better throttle response. Bottom line, faster. The benefits of a metallic catalytic converter vs a ceramic like the factory is that it can take higher temperatures and is more durable (last longer). They are also lighter than their ceramic counterparts.

Our Sports Series 4" High Flow Catted Downpipes is constructed out of 100% 304 grade stainless steel and utilize mandrel bent piping.  They are 100% TIG welded by our in house fabricators and built in the USA.  The factory turbocharger turbine housing utilizes a 4" V-Band flange which we have duplicated and CNC machined cut out of billet 304 stainless steel.  Stainless Steel CNC machined O2 sensor and laser cut brackets are TIG welded using stainless steel rods.  The O2 sensor is positioned at the factory location.  Since the outlet of the turbocharger is 4" and the factory exhaust system is 3", the factory downpipes reduces size using short transitions from 4" before the catalytic convert and 3" afterwards.  Due to space needed for the catalytic converter, the factory downpipes reduce in size using very short transitions.  Since our catless downpipes delete the catalytic converter, we have more space.  Thus, we use very long transitions.  These longer transitions allow the exhaust gas time to smoothly transition from the larger piping to the smaller.  This results in less exhaust turbulence and backpressure which again improves throttle response and increase turbocharger spool times (less turbocharger lag). 

The factory downpipe utilizes a flex bellow section that allows the exhaust system to move.  This eliminates undue stress on the exhaust components like the exhaust system, downpipe, turbocharger and exhaust manifold.  Many of our competitors do not feel it is important to keep this.  While you do not see any adverse affects right away, over time, the stresses caused by not having a flex section and having a rigid exhaust system will cause premature wear and tear.  Any stress failures like cracks will form quicker than usual on exhaust manifolds and exhaust components.  Also, without a flex section, the exhaust system cannot properly deflect impact.  Especially on lowered cars, whenever the exhaust system contacts the ground, the entire system gets pushed up.  Without a flex, you can imagine how much stress is put into exhaust components like the exhaust manifold when the exhaust is pushed upwards.  We fully understand that durability of our products is important.  Thus, like BMW, we incorporate a flex section into our downpipe.  Our flex sections are 100% stainless steel (cheap flex sections only have stainless steel center braids and steel caps) to ensure corrosion resistance.  

One of the main features of our B46/B48 downpipe is the CNC machined solid stainless steel billet ball joint.  The factory downpipe uses a press formed process to produce the "ball" joint to connect to the factory exhaust.  This process can be done very inexpensively when done in large productions runs.  Unfortunately, the drawback of this press formed "ball" joint is that the interior of the pipe also mimics the outside.  When exhaust flows through a pipe, the majority of the exhaust flow tends to stay on the outer edges of the pipe.  Thus, when exhaust flows into the "ball" section, it goes into the valley created by the "ball" joint and then back up the other side.  This creates tremendous amounts of turbulence in the exhaust flow right at that section.  Turbulence in turn, slows down exhaust flow velocities as well as increase back-pressure.  It's a well known fact that with turbocharged cars, you want the least amount of back-pressure while still maintaining high exhaust flow velocities.  Why?  Because low back-pressure and high velocities allow the turbocharger to spin faster.  This equates to reducing turbocharger lag and faster spool times.  Throttle response is also improved.  We had originally thought to use the same press form process to manufacture our downpipes.  However, very quickly we noticed this flaw to the process and decided to CNC a solid stainless steel billet "ball" joint.  This allowed us to keep the factory connection while keeping the interior of the ball smooth.  This allows the exhaust to flow unrestricted through the "ball" joint.  While this CNC solid stainless steel billet was very expensive to manufacturer, our motto at ER is "Performance, no compromises".  Our in-house testing showed that we did indeed have real world improvements with this new CNC billet "ball" joint and thus worth the extra costs.  This is why the N26 downpipes do cost a little bit more than the N20 downpipes as the N20 downpipes do not have the ball joint system but use a traditional slip-fit design which is cheaper for us to manufacturer.  The pictures below show the factory "ball" joint cut in half (to show in the interior) versus our CNC solid stainless steel billet "ball" joint.

Since we are able to reproduce the factory "ball" joint v-band connector, our downpipes are designed to fit perfectly with either the factory exhaust system or your aftermarket exhaust system.  There are no compatibility issues whatsoever.  The downpipes will come by default with brushed finish.

OPTIONS

Ceramic Thermal Coating - The purpose of ceramic coating downpipes is to keep heat from the exhaust gases inside the downpipe from radiating out. This keeps underhood temperatures lower and less heat absorption by nearby parts/surfaces.  Another added benefit is that by keeping in heat (energy) in the exhaust gases inside the downpipe, exhaust flow velocities stay up, resulting in lower backpressure. The ceramic coating also adds additional corrosion resistance. We utilize the best ceramic coating possible. Our thermal coating can resist up to 2000F of heat. It is available in black only (all the other colors cannot withstand the high levels of heat).

Additional O2 Sensor Bung - An additional O2 sensor bung can be added so that you can easily add a wideband O2 sensor and gauges for you to monitor air/fuel ratios. The additional O2 sensor bung will come pre-installed with a plug so that you do not need to run the O2 sensor right away.  This is not required for a normal standard installation.

Optional EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) Bung - An additional 1/8" NPT bung can be added so that you can easily add a EGT sensor and gauge. The optional EGT sensor bung will come pre-installed with a plug so that you do not need to run the EGT sensor right away.  This is not required for a normal standard installation.

TPMS Compatability is a LIE

2018 Subaru Impreza, with one tire with a slow leak (about 2 PSI a week) that I couldn't trace. I bought the "Full-Size Sedan, Small Truck, Crossover" kit (the 6 oz. pouch) based on my tire size, 225/40/18. After I removed the valve core, attached the dispensing hose and opened the cap, the product would not flow into the tire. I squeezed the pouch, but that only made the product leak out around the valve stem onto the wheel and driveway. I tried rotating the tire so the valve stem was at the top, and and also at the bottom. I even took the wheel off so I could get a fully vertical flow. Nothing worked. I finally gave up after only about half the product was dispensed, and I do think most of it went somewhere other than in the tire. I reinstalled the valve core, remounted the wheel, plugged in my little lighter socket-powered compresseor, and tried to inflate the tire. And ... NOTHING. The pressure reading on the compressor immediately shot up to over 100 PSI, and it automatically shut off. Tried multiple times, with the same result. I again removed the valve core, and a) no air came out of the tire when I removed it, and b) even with no valve core the compressor still would not pump air into the tire. Clearly the gunk had completely blocked the valve/TPMS. Fortunately, when I took the tire to Costco (where I'd bought it), they were able to fix the damage I'd done, as well as patching a small nail hole in the tread I hadn't seen (that was clearly the source of the slow leak) for no charge. Since I've already submitted a refund request, ultimately all it really cost me was my time and effort ... and a whole lot of stress.

I've had a slow leak in one of my tires for some time. It's a common thing with chrome plated alloy wheels, they get corrosion on the bead area where the tire seals and then you get a slow leak. This was the only product which is water soluble so it's not going to make a permanent mess inside the tire; additionally, it contains tiny bits of Tufsyn which is the material some tires are made from. So it's not just a liquid that is sealing the leak, it's tiny bits of rubber. I was putting 5 or 6 lbs of air in my tire every few days, and I could see that the tire was getting low. I installed this TireJect per the instructions a week ago and the tire appears to be doing great, despite the fact that we've had some very cold weather. (I didn't want to check it with a gauge while it was this cold out because just in case the tire's valve didn't seal all the way; I'll check with a gauge when this cold snap is past.) While I can't say for 100% sure that there is no more leak, I suspect that the leak has been sealed up completely. This is a product unlike the others and I think it's worth the price. FIRST UPDATE: It has been two months and I haven't had to add any air at all to the tire where I used this product. There was a slow rim leak which was losing about a pound or so per day and it has been totally fixed. The car has sat for several days a few times, including in single digit cold weather, as well as driven regularly otherwise, and the tire hasn't lost any air. I think it's the micro Tufsyn fibers in this product which seal leaks better than some goopy glue stuff other brands are made of. I totally recommend this product! SECOND UPDATE - it's been eleven months since I added this to my tire with the slow rim leak and I have not had to add air a single time. Not once. THIS STUFF WORKS. Forget the slime and foam and get this.

TireJECT cannot work miracles

TireJECT is a surprisingly thin fluid that supposedly contains fibers that must help stop up holes. Frankly I'm still confused as to how this stuff can plug a leak, but apparently it does. Tons of reviews say so. I say apparently because the product did not completely stop a slow leak in my tire, but that's OK. I knew it likely wouldn't. I'll have to replace the tire unfortunately. I had a garage install four nearly-new tires on my car. After installing, a heavy leak was discovered in one of them. They took the tire off again and found a small tear near the rim/bead of the sidewall. Since the tear would be flat against the rim, they suggested to let them try and repair it with tire patch adhesive and lots of bead sealer. They were confident, so I went for it. It seemed to work, but it went flat a few days later. TireJECT seemed like the perfect solution to the slow leak since I wouldn't have to disturb the repair. I bought the kind without the syringe and regretted it immediately upon trying to use it. First, the valve stem removal tool broke as it loosened it. I had to buy a new tool down the road. When I went to inject, I squeezed as hard as I could but it just wouldn't flow past the TPM. It also kept leaking out of the flex joint of the nozzle. I had a huge syringe on hand, so I sucked up the rest from the bag, ziptied the hose on both ends and got the rest of the product into the tire. HURRAY! The tire pressure had fallen considerably by the next morning. BOOOoo. I contacted TireJECT, and after several emails (and long waits in between). They determined their product was not suitable for my use case. They refunded what I paid without me even asking. I really appreciated that. That said, before injecting, the tire would go flat overnight. So, TireJECT does work to a good degree. I'm half tempted to overdose the tire with another package. Give TireJECT a try! Though, be sure your situation matches their criteria. If you have a TPM, opt for the package that comes with a syringe. You will need it. Also, throw the cast pot metal, tire stem tool out and get a decent machined one before you do the repair. Thank me later.
