A powerful examination of the unsettling history of photography and its fraught relationship to global antiblackness.

Since photography’s invention, black life has been presented as fraught, short, agonizingly filled with violence, and indifferent to intervention: living death—mortevivum—in a series of still frames that refuse a complex humanity. In Mortevivum, Kimberly Juanita Brown shows us how the visual logic of documentary photography and the cultural legacy of empire have come together to produce the understanding that blackness and suffering—and death—are inextricable. Brown traces this idea from the earliest images of the enslaved to the latest newspaper photographs of black bodies, from the United States and South Africa to Haiti and Rwanda, documenting the enduring, pernicious connection between photography and a global history of antiblackness.

Photography's history, inextricably linked to colonialism and white supremacy, is a catalog of othering, surveillance, and the violence of objectification. In the genocide in Rwanda, for instance, photographs after the fact tell viewers that blackness comes with a corresponding violence that no human intervention can abate. In Haiti, the first black republic in the Western Hemisphere, photographic “evidence” of its sovereign failure suggests that the formerly enslaved cannot overthrow their masters and survive to tell the tale. And in South Africa and the United States, a loop of racial violence reminds black subjects of their lower-class status mandated via the state. Illustrating the global nature of antiblackness that pervades photographic archives of the present and the past, Mortevivum reveals how we live in a repetition of imagery signaling who lives and who dies on a gelatin silver print—on a page in a book, on the cover of newspaper, and in the memory of millions.

Powerful and long lasting
Color: Black
I purchased a blue colored one in May 2022 and it finally went out a few days ago. I ran this thing almost constantly as im going through menopause and it came to be a staple at my bedside. 4 years of running ALL THE TIME! Great little fan with a ton of airflow to keep me cool during night sweats. And it has just enough white noise to distract from outside noise. Also, the motor power never differentiated after using for so long. It was still strong. I just ordered another one to replace it and cant wait for it to arrive so I can sleep again! Only thing is they only have bakck or white instead of blue this time but thats ok as long as it performs.

Small fan, serious power
Color: Black
I bought the Honeywell Turboforce Fan for my bedroom, and I’m honestly impressed with how powerful this little thing is. Don’t let the compact size fool you — it moves a lot of air. On the lowest setting it’s perfect for a gentle breeze while sleeping, and the higher settings can easily cool down a medium-sized room or help circulate AC much more efficiently. The 90-degree pivoting head is a great feature. I can angle it upward for better air circulation or point it directly at me when it’s extra hot. It’s lightweight, easy to move around, and doesn’t take up much space on a desk or nightstand. It can also be wall-mounted, which is a nice bonus. Noise level is reasonable. On low, it’s actually a pleasant white noise. Medium and high are louder, but not in an annoying way — just the sound of strong airflow. Build quality feels solid for the price, and it’s been running daily without any issues. For the cost, this fan seriously overperforms. If you need a compact, affordable, and powerful fan, this is a no-brainer. I’d absolutely buy it again.

Great powerful little fan, good deal.
Color: Black
Nice powerful fan, good price! larger than an average desktop fan, keeps the air moving, and is fairly quiet.

Good value for a powerful fan.
Color: Black
Powerful fan. It’s just a 100 square foot room but you can feel the fan clear across the room. The unit feels durable but it is also extremely lightweight. Easy to move room to room. The fan can face straight ahead or angle to face upwards. It is easy to change the angle of the fan, simply tilt the body and it clicks into place. It does not face downward. When faced upwards it does well to circulate air around the room. It is somewhat loud on higher settings but that is to be expected. At $14.99 this was priced a bit lower than similar units. It’s a good value so far as it is performing well.

Reliable Cooling Power for My Workspace
Color: White, Color: White
This Honeywell TurboForce fan has been a perfect addition to my home office on Staten Island, providing a surprising amount of airflow for such a compact unit. The three speed settings allow me to adjust the intensity based on how warm the room gets, and I’ve found the 90-degree pivoting head incredibly useful for circulating air without having it blow directly on my desk papers. It runs remarkably quietly even on the highest setting, which is essential during long focus sessions or video calls. The white finish looks clean and professional on my tabletop, and the overall build quality feels sturdy enough to handle daily use throughout the summer months.
