Nutritious and Hardy Mexican Tree Spinach

Common Names: Chaya, Mexican Tree Spinach, Mayan Spinach, Chaya Col, Tree Spinach
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Origin: Mexico and Central America

Chaya (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius), also known as Mexican Tree Spinach, is a fast-growing perennial shrub native to Mexico and Central America. This hardy plant is known for its highly nutritious leaves, which are commonly cooked and eaten like spinach. Chaya is a drought-tolerant, easy-to-grow plant that can thrive in a variety of climates, making it an excellent addition to home gardens. Its high nutritional value, especially in iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C, makes it a valuable leafy green in traditional diets. The plant's leaves must be cooked before consumption to neutralize the naturally occurring toxins, making it a safe and highly nutritious vegetable.

Distinctive Features, Uses, and Nutritional Value

Foliage: Chaya has large, dark green, palmate leaves that resemble those of cassava or castor beans. The leaves are packed with nutrients, including vitamins A, C, and B, calcium, iron, and protein. While the leaves contain a small amount of toxic compounds (cyanogenic glycosides), cooking/blanching them for 10-15 minutes renders them safe to eat.

Flowers: Chaya produces small, white flowers that attract pollinators like butterflies and bees.

Growth Habit: This shrub can grow up to 6-10 feet tall, with a bushy, tree-like growth habit, making it ideal for garden borders, food forests, or as a backdrop in ornamental gardens.

Culinary and Medicinal Uses

Chaya leaves are primarily used in cooking, where they are boiled and served as a green vegetable. The leaves are often added to soups, stews, or mixed with other vegetables. In traditional medicine, Chaya has been used to promote overall health, improve digestion, and treat conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The plant is recognized for its high nutritional value, providing essential vitamins and minerals that contribute to a balanced diet.

These are quite large for a puppy
Flavor Name: REAL Bacon/REAL Maplewood, Size: Puppy Tiny (2-Pack)
These are advertised as puppy but I wish there were still different sizes for the different sizes of puppies. It seems extra small dogs are left out of alot of things. My older larger dog seems to like these but shes only touched it once because these are also quite hard. And my tiny puppy wants to chew these but theyre so big she cant even get ahold of it. I wish there were more options for very small dogs/puppies. Because they seemed to really like these and wanted them but just cant chew them...

Finally a toy that isn’t destroyed in 7 minutes
This really is virtually indestructible! My dog is an aggressive tour and she has given this thing the business more often than not, and it does not even have a hole in it! My dog enjoys it immensely! It’s easy to take places. I love that it’s bright yellow and easy to see so I don’t trip over it! Definitely suitable for aggressive chewers!

Great choice for heavy chewers
Perfect for dogs that chew hard! Ours shred comparable toys at every turn, but this has held up beautifully. We’ve had it for a few months and it’s got minor wear and tear, but it is easy for them to play with, hardy, and worth every penny.

Durable, Fun, soft enough to not break teeth
Finally found a quality toy that our 75lb Black Mouth Cur hasn't destroyed in 5 minutes! In fact it's been a few months now. There are teeth marks, but she hasn't been able to take a chunk out of it yet. It even has some bounce to it when you toss it. And she finds it fun. Veterinary dentists recommend toys that are soft enough that you can leave a fingernail print in for toys that are less likely to break teeth, unlike bones and antlers. This is that toy! (My other dog broke both of her upper 3 rooted premolars on a Nylabone - healthy roots but the slab fracture exposed the pulp and had to be removed. Healthy roots are more difficult to remove. Dentists say those and antlers are money makers. 😭)
