This is a handmade organic cotton hoodie upcycled from a 4.5-metre Fukuro obi (Japanese traditional sash).

This panel is made from a vintage Japanese obi – a traditional sash worn with kimono – and it features a really elegant design inspired by Japanese court culture.

The large golden wheels and covered carts are called Goshoguruma, which were ox-drawn carriages used by aristocrats over a thousand years ago. They symbolize elegance, nobility, and the refined lifestyle of the imperial court.

The background is made up of colourful hexagons – a traditional pattern known as kikkō, or tortoiseshell – which represents longevity and strength. Inside each hexagon, you’ll find tiny floral motifs, hinting at the beauty of the seasons.

With all the shimmering gold and bold patterns, this piece feels both regal and timeless – a little window into the world of classical Japan.

What’s a Fukuro Obi?

A fukuro obi is a long, decorative sash traditionally worn with a kimono in Japan.
