How to install ATEN 32 x 32 Modular Matrix Switch Gen.2

Installing the VM3250 Gen. 2 is a disciplined, scalable process that begins with planning your routing topology and workspace layout. Start by identifying your sources (computers, Blu-ray players, media servers) and displays (monitors, projectors, video walls), then map out which inputs connect to which outputs across rooms or zones. This planning step helps determine the number of input and output cards you’ll need and how you’ll wire power and control networks. The modular design means you can install the core chassis first and add input/output cards later as your AV matrix grows, minimizing downtime during deployment.

  • Unpack and inspect the VM3250 Gen. 2 chassis and all modular I/O cards for any transit damage or missing components; verify that your rack space complies with ventilation and clearance requirements.
  • Mount the chassis in a standard equipment rack and connect the power supply(s) as specified by the manufacturer’s guidelines; ensure power is stable and surge-protected.
  • Install the appropriate input and output cards into the modular slots. Confirm card seating and secure all fasteners according to the installation manual to prevent looseness during operation or transport.
  • Connect HDMI sources to the designated input ports and connect HDMI displays to the outputs you plan to route to. Attach any associated audio cables if you’re routing embedded or external audio through the matrix.
  • Connect control devices and management networks. You can access the unit via the built-in web GUI over Ethernet, or connect through RS‑232/RS‑485 for integration with existing control systems.
  • Power on the chassis and perform an initial configuration. Use the web GUI to set a static IP address or DHCP, define EDID profiles, enable HDCP handling, and configure default routing profiles for common scenes.
  • Define routing maps for your production or presentation workflows, create presets for frequently used configurations, and test the signal path from each source to its intended display(s) to verify picture and sound integrity.
  • Save configurations and backup the matrix setup. If your workflow requires remote management, enable IP-based access control and apply security settings to prevent unauthorized changes.
  • Document your routing matrix and provide end-user instructions for ongoing operation, including how to recall presets and perform routine checks on video and audio quality across all connected devices.

Frequently asked questions

  • Q: What is the VM3250 Gen. 2 best suited for? A: It is ideal for high-density AV distributions where many sources must be routed to many displays across a single chassis, such as control rooms, education campuses, corporate AV ecosystems, and broadcasting environments, with future-proof modular expansion.
  • Q: Can I expand beyond 32 inputs and 32 outputs? A: Yes. The modular architecture is designed to grow by adding compatible I/O cards and expansion options, allowing you to scale the matrix as your installation requirements increase.
  • Q: How do I control the matrix? A: You can manage routing and system settings through the robust web GUI, use RS‑232/RS‑485 serial commands for automation, or integrate the device into IP-based control systems for centralized command and monitoring.
  • Q: Does this switch support 4K content? A: The VM3250 Gen. 2 is designed to handle high-resolution scenarios common in modern AV setups, including high-quality 4K content, with appropriate input/output cards and cabling. Always verify with your source and display capabilities and ensure EDID management is configured correctly.
  • Q: What about uptime and reliability? A: The system supports redundant power configurations and a modular approach that minimizes downtime during maintenance or upgrades, making it suitable for mission-critical environments.
  • Q: Do I need specialized tools to install? A: Basic rack equipment, standard screwdrivers for card installation, and standard AV cabling are sufficient. Always follow the manufacturer’s installation guide and safety precautions.

One of the best deals available!
Color: White, Size: 2 Pack
Extremely sturdy, good looking and easy to install. I have a couple of dozen feet of assorted lengths in the kitchen, bedroom, living room and foyer. Holding all sorts of antique clocks, audio equipment and cooking stuff from my flours and assorted cornmeals to cases of powdered “lemonade”.

Mounting system doesn’t align on one of three shelves.
Color: Walnut, Size: 3 Pack
Nice shelves. Install was super easy except on one of the three shelves. The main mounting shelf holes were off so the shelf will not slip onto horizontal mounting poles unless I modify the shelf. So a 20 minute job becomes a two hour job. The mounting system does appear very sturdy just not aligned.

Worth the investment
Size: 1 Panel, Size: 1 Panel
I had to order this in an emergency. To put it in brief words, I live in a two level studio unit. My bedroom TV fell backwards off the bureau accidentally and down the stairs to its demise. Putting this together was no problem, instructions were thorough and easy. It came with several bars that connected together smoothly and an Allen key for the brackets and screws for the feet. I did one less horizontal bar on top and bottom so it could fit, which was great because with all of them on it was too long. However I ran into the difficulty of the horizontal bars popping out of the brackets during the last stages, but eventually got it done. I was also looking for a specific type of divider where I could adjust the feet so I could tuck it in between the dresser and banister. Glad I made this purchase.

You Get What You Pay For! A Piece Of Junk!
Size: 1 Panel
Flimsy and a piece of junk. Don’t waste your money. Assembly is a pain because it is so flimsy. Divider is thin. You can see right through it. Very wobbly.

Instructions are useless
Size: 1 Panel
The instructions are poorly written and not very helpful. The divider itself is easy to assemble, and honestly, it would’ve been quicker if I had skipped the directions altogether. Once put together, though, it works as intended.
