Musically, the album marks a departure from the lush, baroque arrangements of the band's earlier work, embracing a more stripped-down, refined sound. Drawing influences from folk, blues, and gospel, the record presents a raw, introspective energy.
Critics praised How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful for its cohesive production and Welch's commanding vocal performance. The album appeared on several year-end best-of lists, with many noting its maturity and emotional depth. Upon release, it debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, selling 68,788 copies in its first week, making it the band’s third consecutive chart-topping album.
