The world-famous musician and comedian’s iconic artworks have no less impact than one of his legendary comedy sketches, with his humour communicated through shapes and lines rather than words. Billy’s art is charmingly simplistic, his faceless figures possess an extraordinary self-awareness and humanity. Devoid of emotion or expression, their anonymity opens them up to individual interpretation, creating a unique bond with the viewer.
In his unmistakeable monochrome style, Connolly has revisited his own original style with the return of black and white drawings. While there’s pathos and darkness, the humour and wit reflected in “Drunk Donkey” is a true contemplation of Connolly’s character. Donkeys, which have been featured previously in Billy’s art, are “endearing kind of funny” according to the artist, who owned two donkeys when he lived in Scotland. Reminiscing of how they used to escape the garden and run down to the village, “Drunk Donkey” happened very naturally as Billy started drawing and it “just became a donkey”. “They're lovely, they're friendly, they're like dogs. They cling to you; they've got a real tie to human beings. And I loved them”.
Given the artwork is a Double Hit Flatbed Giclée Print, the texture and glossiness of the line’s contrast beautifully with the deckle-edged 100% Cotton Aquarelle Arches-Torchon 300gsm paper. Hand-signed by The Big Yin himself, this artwork will add a bold and humorous touch of musical and comedic history to your home.
This piece can also be purchased in a portfolio of four, either framed or unframed. Discover more about this release on our blog or view all Billy's artwork here.
