Meet the pinnacle of portable data security with the IronKey Vault Privacy 80 External SSD. This is Kingston’s flagship, OS-independent hardware-encrypted external drive that places control of your sensitive information directly in your hands. Designed for security-conscious professionals, government contractors, and enterprises that require stringent protection on the go, the VP80ES combines a massive 7.50 TB capacity with a built-in touch screen for on-device authentication, eliminating the need to rely on software credentials or host computers. The result is a drive that stays secure even when connected to unknown workstations, shared devices, or public terminals, ensuring your data remains inaccessible to unauthorized users.

  • Hardware-based, OS-independent encryption: The Vault Privacy 80 encrypts data on the device itself, so your information remains protected regardless of the host operating system or installed software. There’s no reliance on software-based keys stored on a computer, reducing exposure to malware and system-level vulnerabilities.
  • On-device touch-screen authentication: A built-in touch screen provides private, local authentication without needing to install drivers or software on the host machine. This feature minimizes risk from compromised computers and makes authentication straightforward in the field or at a shared workstation.
  • Brute Force protection with crypto-erase: If authentication attempts fail, the drive automatically crypto-erases data after a configurable number of attempts, safeguarding your files against brute-force attacks and preventing unauthorized data access.
  • BadUSB protection with digitally-signed firmware: The drive uses firmware that is digitally signed to guard against firmware-based USB attacks, ensuring the device you connect has not been tampered with.
  • Massive capacity in a portable chassis: With 7.50 TB of usable space, you can store large archives, backups, datasets, and media libraries securely in a compact, rugged external SSD designed for travel and flexible deployment.

How to install IronKey Vault Privacy 80

Setting up the IronKey Vault Privacy 80 is designed to be straightforward and operator-friendly, with security features built into the hardware so you can start protecting data immediately. To install and begin using the drive, follow these steps:

Step 1: Connect the drive to a USB port on your computer. Ensure you are using a trusted USB port and avoid hubs that could introduce additional risk. Step 2: When prompted, power on the drive if your model requires an external power switch or battery indicator. Step 3: On the built-in touch screen, follow the on-screen prompts to initialize the device. This will typically involve selecting a user account, creating a strong authentication method, and setting any required security policies such as auto-lock timing and brute force thresholds. Step 4: Create or enroll your authentication credentials directly on the device. The on-device setup eliminates the need to install software on the host computer, preserving security in shared or public environments. Step 5: Format the drive or prepare a secure vault as directed by the on-screen prompts. Once initialized, the VP80ES will operate as a secure, portable storage volume that remains encrypted even when unplugged. It’s important to store your authentication credentials securely and to keep the device’s firmware up to date to maintain the highest level of protection. Step 6: If you are deploying this drive across an organization, consider creating separate user profiles with distinct access rights and implementing a centralized policy for brute-force thresholds and crypto-erase settings mentioned on the device. Step 7: Safely eject the drive from the operating system when finished, and verify that the encryption state remains active and that no data was left unencrypted on the host machine.

Why this setup matters: the Vault Privacy 80’s OS-independence means it does not rely on specific drivers, operating-system versions, or software suites. You can trust it to safeguard data across Windows, macOS, and Linux environments, including field laptops, shared test stations, or customer-site workstations. The combination of a touch-screen interface, hardware encryption, and firmware integrity checks makes it a practical choice for professionals who require rigorous control over who can access sensitive information, where it can be accessed, and under what conditions access is granted.

I wouldn’t recommend this for strong chewers.
Color: Orange, Color: Orange
Is it fun? Sure. Was it easy to charge and set up? Yep. That being said, this toy kind of fell flat for me. It really didn’t do any big movements once charged that I expected it to, so that was a bummer. I initially got it for my dog, but my cats were more interested in this than my dog was. The battery does seem to last a long time and the motor is pretty quiet. I WOULD NOT recommend this toy for strong chewers as the material for this is a foam rubber and I don’t think it’s durable enough for strong chewers. While the material makes this ball extremely lightweight for more movement, a strong chewer would have this disintegrated in five minutes flat. My Dog is a super strong chewer. I don’t think I would feel comfortable leaving him unattended with this because I know he would destroy it.

Well-designed and quiet, but didn’t keep my dog interested
Color: Blue
My dog was interested in this at first, but she would lose interest after a few minutes and move on. I do like that it’s quieter than the hard plastic ball toys, and the charge lasts well. The internal charging port that twists closed is also a nice design feature. That said, it will occasionally turn on by itself, which can be a little surprising. Overall, it has some nice features, but it just didn’t keep my dog engaged.

Good - for a few hours
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
Concept is fantastic. Dog loved it. Problem is that she figured out how to open it within two hours of play. The robot core, alas, did not survive. In the photo, you see a tooth went cleanly into the button and that was the end of the toy.

The most engaging interactive toy for my Border Collie
Color: Orange, Color: Orange
My Border Collie is not a big ball player. He prefers tug type games and actually gives me a look like, “Are you stupid? I’m not going to keep bringing that to you if all you’re going to do is throw it away again!” after about the third time I throw a ball for him to fetch. However, I can only play tug so often and I need him to be entertained and engaged as much as possible. I got him a smaller, non-padded ball like this hoping he would like the interactive aspect of it. He did- he actually loved it! But it was loud, hard on his teeth, would come apart periodically, and he kept hitting the off button when playing with it. It drove me crazy. This one is so much better overall! The soft outer shell is not only easier on his teeth, but it is super resilient to biting and chewing. He actually likes to carry this thing around in his mouth while it’s bouncing and vibrating. The three modes give great flexibility for different kinds of play. His favorite is the most active mode: the ball reacts to touch and practically bounces itself across the floor when he touches it with his paw or mouth. I will point out that in one of the modes, I thought the battery wasn’t charged or there was a motor issue because it’s very subdued movement; however, it’s just set up as a low-key option. Be sure to check out each mode to see which works best for your dog at different times. I can’t say enough about this ball- I have been so pleasantly surprised by how much he loves it. The rechargeable feature is super convenient, it’s big enough to not get stuck under the couch, and it automatically shuts off based on whichever mode it’s set on. As the owner of a busy, super-smart dog who needs to be engaged in mental and physical activity, I think this all is worth every penny. In fact, I’m buying one for a friend who has a Border Collie pup with lots of energy to burn! I highly recommend this toy- it’s the most engaging toy I’ve found that Finn will play with on his own.
