This is the adidas – Newcastle United 1997/99 home football shirt, shown here with Shearer 9 on the back. It features Newcastle’s classic black-and-white stripes, the club crest at the centre chest, gold adidas branding, and the iconic Newcastle Brown Ale sponsor. The back is especially memorable, with the large shield-style number panel, SHEARER 9, and the oversized Newcastle United scroll graphic wrapping across the lower rear of the shirt. Few Premier League shirts from the late 1990s are as instantly recognisable as this one.

What makes this shirt stand out is how unapologetically bold it is. The basic black-and-white stripe identity is there, but adidas pushed it further with tonal jacquard patterning through the white panels, strong gold trim details, and one of the most distinctive back-of-shirt treatments of the era. The oversized number panel gives it a very specific late-90s feel, and in a good way. It feels dramatic, loud, and unmistakably Premier League. With Shearer 9 on the back, it becomes even stronger, because Alan Shearer is inseparable from Newcastle’s modern identity.

This shirt is tied to Newcastle United’s 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons, when the club still had major presence in English football and Alan Shearer remained the central figure in attack. Shearer was not just the star player, but the symbol of the team, and that is exactly why this shirt carries so much weight. For many collectors, a Newcastle shirt from this era only becomes complete with Shearer 9 on the back. It is one of those combinations that feels definitive.

From a collecting perspective, this is a very strong piece because it brings together several things at once: a highly recognisable adidas template from the late 1990s, one of football’s most famous beer sponsors, and the most iconic Newcastle player of the Premier League era. It is the kind of shirt that works for Newcastle collectors, Premier League collectors, and anyone drawn to bold 1990s football design.

Started w/ audiobook, now I'm ordering the print too
Format: Paperback
This book is GREAT!! The integration of theory she uses to support her claims is masterful. I began listening to the audiobook, because it was cheaper & I go through a ton of counseling & psych books. I am a grad student in social work, and I'm also a therapy client trying to heal myself. I appreciate that this book targets "chronic shame" which as a central experience to a bunch of issues. The hundreds of books and articles I've researched seem like they were mostly ALL working back to this issue. In a psychology culture that is big on cognitive and chemical solutions to mental health, the relational approach that she emphasizes is critical to the healing process. I appreciate the research she uses from object relations, affect regulation, interpersonal, etc. I purchased the hard copy because 1. I can't underline/highlight an audiobook and 2. I want a copy of the references of theorists and study's that she draws from, because they are pure gold. All therapists need to understand the contents of this book! Unless you are perfectly fine offering band aid solutions. Clients and self-helpers beware. It's not triggering in terms of content, it is activating in the sense that she describes the felt experience of shame SO WELL. I could locate my own felt sense of shame which is, by default, unpleasant. Some stabilization and a decent therapeutic connection is probably necessary before cracking this book open. But that's why I love it. I needed to go deeper and get the core issues. And this book is like a map that guides you right to it.

One of the best books on shame out there
Format: Paperback
As a shame researcher and educator, I often refer to DeYoung's book because it is so full of resources and relational tools for clinicians and individuals relating to the neurobiology of shame. It is a very small book with A LOT of information. Many references to the shame research and suggestions for treating shame in clinical practice from a perspective of right brain relationship dynamics. Thank you Patricia!

Highly recommend.
Format: Paperback
One of the most helpful, lucid, and comprehensive books on shame I've encountered. This was required reading for graduate school and is now one of my most returned to, dog-eared, and referenced books. Can't recommend enough.
