The Education of a Yankee by Judson D. Hale

Written with a delightful sense of irony and a profound tenderness, The Education of a Yankee is an engaging memoir that skillfully reveals the grand, eccentric, and occasionally tragic history of a very unconventional family.

Judson Hale was born into Boston's very proper Brahmin world, the son of a wealthy father who loved sailing and horseback riding and a beautiful, talented mother who loved opera and sang professionally. But readers expecting a conventional account of New England privilege will be delightfully surprised. The fate of Hale's older brother, Drake, led his parents to embark on a dramatic, extravagant, and visionary undertaking that changed the family's history and brought a remarkable adventure to the small town of Vanceboro, Maine. So began an idealistic and wonderful dream that was to shape Hale's childhood and adolescence, but which ended differently from what his parents had envisioned.

The Education of a Yankee, at once funny and touching, is full of marvelous anecdotes about life on this unusual farm. We watch anxiously as he finally meets his brother, Drake, and see him wrestle with the challenges of joining the family-owned Yankee magazine, which, under his editorial direction, has become the third largest regional magazine in the country.

Good Text Book
Format: Hardcover
This is a great book when looking for an introduction to the OT. It is fairly easy to read, and each chapter ends with questions which encourage the reader to retain what was just read. This book seemed at least to this reader, to take fairly complex subjects and make them understandable and very readable.

Good book did not care for "Criticism"
Format: Kindle
Chapter one was the authors getting us to understand what they meant by "introduction" and "criticism". Chapters 2-4 were the settings of the Old Testament. Chapters 5-6 are how we got today's bible. Chapters 7-9 are the different methodologies of criticism. by the time you reach the chapter on Genesis you are one third of the way through the book. Each Bible book how it got its english name canonicity composition literary form structure outline issues study questions The criticism parts of the book ( chapters 7-9 and several pages for each biblical book) were the parts that I did not personally care for. They seemed to bore my and did not effect my understanding of the author or authors of each biblical book. I had read the New Testament its Background and Message before this and was expecting something similar to it. They did a good job trying to bring three thousand year old information to us in an understandable way. It is a blessing to know that most of the sacred text have not changed or changed very little but not effecting the meaning. They first laid out the verifiable data for each topic and then moved to interpretations with an emphasis on the author's interpretations.
