The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom ranks among aviation's most accomplished post-war jet fighters, and Britain's Fleet Air Arm variant, the FG.1 represents a particularly distinguished chapter in this success story. Procured to modernise Royal Navy air defence and replace the ageing de Havilland Sea Vixen, these naval Phantoms delivered formidable all-weather fleet protection alongside potent strike capabilities.
Operating from the confined flight deck of HMS Ark Royal demanded substantial airframe modifications and exceptional pilot skill; only Britain's most accomplished fast-jet aviators were entrusted with commanding these powerful machines. The FG.1 remains celebrated for its striking aesthetic and operational prowess, embodying the pinnacle of carrier aviation engineering.
This Airfix 1/48 scale model faithfully recreates an aircraft that exemplified British naval aviation at its zenith.
