The Shapton Glass Stone HR 2.45 Micron #6000 Grit is part of the Glass Stone series, known for its innovative design that combines multiple layers of glass to create thin and lightweight sharpening stones. This series offers excellent usability, allowing users to achieve the desired finish for any blade type.
The 6000 grit Glass Stone is classified as a fine grit stone, ideal for leaving a light polish and a refined edge on your blade. Adding it to your sharpening progression will result in optimal sharpness.
Contrary to the traditional perception of sharpening stones as large and heavy, Glass Stones are thin, light, and strong due to the layers of tempered glass bonded together. This construction gives them high resistance to cracking or sudden breakage caused by external shocks, such as accidental drops.
The abrasives in these glass stones are extremely uniform, ensuring that the abrasive encountered with the first pass of a blade remains consistent throughout the stone's lifespan. This uniformity guarantees reliable and precise sharpening results.
The Glass Stone series includes two types each of the 4000, 6000, and 8000 sharpening stones. The main difference between them lies in the abrasive agents used. Specifically, the Glass Stone series 50603, 50703, and 50803 are recommended for sharpening composite steel blades where steel has been forge-welded with another metal.
Each Glass Stone in the series consists of a 5mm tempered glass backing plate bonded to a 5mm thick stone. Shapton sharpening Glass Stones are made with finely graded ceramic cutting media that requires less flattening and has a longer lifespan compared to most whetstones.
