Polished billet aluminum deck lid stand-offs for 1950–1964 VW Type 1 Beetle. The classic Cal-look engine-cooling and style upgrade — props the rear deck lid open by a few inches at the latch, dramatically improving engine bay airflow while showcasing the iconic raised-deck-lid aesthetic. EMPI part #17-2948-0.

Why deck lid stand-offs became iconic on early Beetles

Air-cooled VWs cool themselves by drawing air through the engine bay louvers and over the fins of the cylinders. On hot days, in traffic, or with performance engines making more heat than stock, engine bay temperatures climb to the point where oil temperature and ignition reliability both suffer. Cracking the rear deck lid open even an inch or two roughly doubles the available airflow into the engine compartment.

Decades ago, Cal-look builders started using stand-offs to permanently prop the deck lid in this open position — partly for cooling, partly because the raised-deck-lid look became one of the defining visual signatures of Cal-look Beetles. The style has been continuously popular for 50+ years.

Specifications

  • Material: Billet aluminum
  • Finish: Polished
  • Function: Hold rear deck lid in raised/open position at latch
  • Part number: 17-2948-0
  • Vendor: EMPI

Fitment

  • VW Beetle (Type 1): 1950–1964 — pre-1965 deck lid latch geometry

Will NOT fit: 1965 and later Beetles, which use a different deck lid latch design. If your Beetle is 1965 or newer, look for the appropriate stand-off for your year — the latch and lock geometry changed.

FAQ

Will this work on my 1967 Beetle?
No. The 1965 model year brought changes to the deck lid and latch design. This specific stand-off is sized for the pre-1965 latch geometry. Order the correct year-specific version for 1965+ cars.

How much does the deck lid open with the stand-off installed?
Typically about 1–2 inches at the latch — enough to dramatically improve airflow without making the lid look like it's failing to latch. The exact amount depends on the stand-off and your specific lid hinge condition.

Do I need to drill holes in my deck lid?
Most stand-offs install at the existing latch points. Check the installation hardware and instructions when the product arrives — no permanent modification is typically required, though some installations benefit from small alignment adjustments.

Does this actually help with cooling?
Yes, measurably. On a hot day in traffic, opening the rear deck lid 1–2 inches drops engine bay temperatures noticeably — most builders running 1776cc+ engines or live in hot climates consider deck lid props essential. On a fully stock 1200cc Beetle in mild weather, the impact is smaller but still positive.

Is this for show or function?
Both. Visually, it's the iconic Cal-look stance. Functionally, it improves cooling significantly enough that performance engine builders consider it cheap insurance.

Will rain or dirt get into the engine bay with the lid open?
Some, yes — though not as much as you'd expect, since the lid is still mostly closed. Most owners drop the deck lid for car wash or rain driving. The stand-off can be removed in seconds without tools on most installations.

Good start to a series
Format: Kindle
I delayed reading the series for reasons I don’t remember. But my TBR list is huge so I thought I’d take a shot of this and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think the blurb about it was anything special. But it was a very good book. It took some interesting twists and turns. I am so glad the second book is already out. Because I would not have waited patiently. Very slow burn but good storyline. 🔥🔥/5

A good read
Format: Kindle
Multiple points of view. 3 Alpha men and an Omega male. She is a Beta in training for a new program placing betas in Alpha/Omega packs. Mila is only doing the program for the money to take care of her dad. She wasn't expecting to fall for a pack but when she sees this packs Omega she is done for. There is just something about him. His Alphas are good looking as well. Too bad she is hiding a secret and their government is acting shady. I liked it and can't wait to see where their story goes.

Slightly repetitive but I did love some things
Format: Kindle
I love this type of story. And omegaverse is one of my all time favorite genres. But there are a few things that pulled me out of my enjoyment while I was reading. It was repetitive at times as well as struggled with telling not showing. So we didn’t always feel like we were experiencing things with the main character. There were also some plot holes but they may still be answered in part 2. Now this isn’t to be said I didn’t enjoy parts of the story. I loved the almost instant love between Mila and Oliver. And how he started changing around her.

delightful read
Format: Kindle
What a delightful read. The characters are awesome, the plot was so good, I loved it. I was intrigued and it kept me wanting more. Told in multiple pov, the book sucks you in and doesn’t let go. I cannot wait to read the next book.

not bad
Format: Kindle
I loved the plot of this book. The characters just didn’t have a lot of depth. The connections and “love” just weren’t communicated very well in the writing. The author didn’t write the sweet psycho trope very well at all either. Lachlan was just a mess of a character.
