The Orange Checkerboard Wrasse is a stunning reef-safe species admired for its intricate orange, green, and blue patterning and graceful swimming behavior. Peaceful and active, this wrasse makes a captivating addition to mature reef aquariums, where it helps control small pests such as flatworms and pyramid snails.

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Great Barrier Reef, Macropharyngodon ornatus inhabits coral reefs and sandy lagoons, often foraging over rubble and coral heads.

An omnivore that thrives on a diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. It will also graze naturally on small invertebrates in the aquarium. Feed 2–3 times daily.

Peaceful and reef-safe with most species. Ideal companions include tangs, gobies, anthias, and other non-aggressive wrasses. Avoid aggressive fish and ensure plenty of live rock and sand for foraging and resting.

Generally peaceful, though males may become territorial toward other wrasses in confined spaces. Provide ample swimming room and hiding spots to minimize aggression.

Recommended for intermediate aquarists. Requires a mature aquarium with established live rock and a sand bed for sleeping and security.
