The factory block mounted lift pumps found on the 1998.5-2004.5 Cummins have proven themselves as being nothing better than a temporary Band-Aid. Further, as the lift pumps failed, it would cause premature failure of the injection pump, a very expensive repair. While Dodge began retrofitting fuel pumps from the block to inside of the fuel tank, it has been shown that this conversion is better than the original units, but still not adequate, especially for those that have made any performance upgrades whatsoever. This pump kit is designed for those trucks that have the converted in-tank pumps and will deliver either 100 or 150 gallons per hour (GPH) of fuel, enough to support stock to 500+ rear wheel horsepower.AirDog I-4G is designed to operate at flows and pressures beyond the maximum requirements of the engine. It receives fuel under vacuum from the fuel tank containing entrained air/vapor, particulate contaminates and unknown quantities of water.
The fuel passes through the water separator which removes the large particulate contaminates that could damage or jam the gear rotor fuel pump. The fuel, with only entrained air/vapor and tiny particulate contaminates remaining enters the fuel pump.
The fuel, now under positive pressure flow, enters the fuel filter. As the fuel passes through the filter media and the remaining particulate contaminates are caught and contained, the entrained air/vapor is also separated. Through the positive fuel air separation features of the patented AirDog I-4G the separated air/vapor is discharged from the filter and back to the fuel tank through the Primary Air/Vapor Discharge Port.
The fuel passing through the filter media is now free of contaminates and power robbing air/vapor. At pressures and flows able to meet the needs of the engine, it exits the fuel filter through two passageways. First, the fuel for the engine passes into the fuel pickup tube and on to the engine. Then, the excess fuel not needed by the engine recycles internally through the pressure regulator back to the water separator.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING IN-TANK FUEL PUMP:
This specific AirDog unit is designed for trucks featuring the in-tank
lift pump. For those unaware, all of the 1998.5-2004.5 Cummins powered
Rams came from the factory with a block mounted lift pump. However, if
it ever failed and had it replaced previously, it very likely was
retrofitted to the newer design that actually placed the pump in the
fuel tank. If you're not sure where your pump is located, simply "bump"
the key, which will engage the pump, then listen whether the hum from
the pump is coming from the engine compartment or the fuel tank.
Unsure of whether you need the Airdog 100 or the Airdog 150? - Put it this way...if your truck is stock, or moderately stock(up to 500hp) you want the 100. If you've added a 100hp injectors/tuner or larger(500hp+), you will want the 150. If you have any questions, give us a call
