Purple Branch Hard Coral (Porites sp.)

(Also known as Branching Porites, Finger Coral, or Small Polyp Stony Coral)

Overview

The Purple Branch Hard Coral (Porites sp.) is a resilient and long-lived small-polyp stony (SPS) coral, prized for its slender, finger-like branches and deep purple to lavender hues. It forms compact colonies with a smooth or slightly porous texture, creating a striking visual contrast against green and orange corals in reef aquariums. Known for its durability and ability to adapt to a range of lighting and flow conditions, Porites is a staple in SPS-dominated systems. While slower-growing than some SPS species, it rewards patience with rich colouration and intricate structure, making it an excellent choice for aquarists looking to introduce branching complexity to their reefscape.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, and the Red Sea. Commonly found in lagoon slopes, reef flats, and upper reef crests, where it thrives under bright sunlight and strong, turbulent flow.

Feeding

Porites corals are primarily photosynthetic, relying on zooxanthellae for energy. While capable of absorbing dissolved nutrients, they also benefit from occasional feeding of fine particulate foods. Feed 1–2 times per week with:

  • Marine snow or phytoplankton
  • Micronised coral foods or powdered SPS blends
  • Rotifers or bacterioplankton-based supplements

Feed in moderate flow to ensure fine foods can settle and circulate around the colony.

Lighting

High lighting.Porites thrives under intense, full-spectrum illumination from LED, T5, or metal halide systems.

  • PAR range: 200–400 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s
  • Acclimate gradually to prevent bleaching.
  • Blue and violet spectrums enhance its natural purple pigmentation and maintain vivid tones.
Water Flow

Strong, turbulent flow. Provide alternating or randomised currents to promote gas exchange and prevent detritus from collecting between branches. This mimics natural reef conditions and supports healthy tissue and polyp extension.

Placement
  • Position on the upper to mid rockwork, where it receives strong light and water movement.
  • Allow 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) of clearance from other corals, as Porites is peaceful but can be overgrown or irritated by more aggressive neighbours.
  • Avoid shaded areas — consistent lighting is essential for maintaining colour and growth.
Tank Mates

Reef safe. Compatible with:

  • Peaceful reef fish (wrasses, tangs, gobies, anthias, clownfish, etc.)
  • Invertebrates such as shrimp, snails, and hermit crabs
  • Other SPS corals with similar light and flow requirements

Avoid:

  • Aggressive LPS corals (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea, Hydnophora) nearby
  • Large angelfish or butterflyfish that may nip polyps
Aggression

Peaceful.Porites does not possess long sweeper tentacles and is easily outcompeted by aggressive species. Maintain clear spacing to prevent encroachment or damage from neighbours.

Experience Level

Intermediate to advanced. The Purple Branch Coral is hardy but thrives best in mature reef systems with stable, low-nutrient conditions and consistent flow. It’s an excellent choice for aquarists experienced in maintaining SPS-dominant environments.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
  • Alkalinity (dKH): 8–10
  • Calcium: 420–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
  • Nitrate: <5 ppm
  • Phosphate: <0.03 ppm
  • Tank Size: Minimum 150 litres (40 gallons); larger systems preferred for stability and flow management

Stable alkalinity and low nutrients are critical for maintaining strong skeletal growth and vibrant purple coloration.

Reef Compatibility

Fully reef safe. The Purple Branch Hard Coral is a classic SPS species that brings elegance, structure, and rich colour to high-energy reef systems. When provided with stable parameters, intense lighting, and strong flow, it develops into a stunning, long-lasting centrepiece coral.

I purchased a Kong Extreme Dog Toy at Tractor Supply and it lasted for several weeks with no signs of damage and then my dog lost it. So I went on the search for more Kong Extreme toys for powerful chewers on Amazon. I have a 60 lb. American Straffordshire Pit and he is a fierce chewer. Most chew toys can make it for a day with some damage but by day 2 the fun is over. For him because the toy is torn to bits and for me because I have to pick up the remnants. I have learned not to get him anything fuzzy - he will rip the fuzz off and I have learned not to get him anything with a squeaker because he will not stop chewing until he finds the squeaker and rip it out. He had the end of the Kong Extreme Goodie Bond Dog Toy off in less than 30 minutes and that was alternating between the Wubba toy for fetching and the bone for chewing, I can tell the Wubba isn't going to last anytime if I let him sit down and chew on it so I had to keep taking it away from him. He likes to catch but he doesn't like to fetch. When I took the bone out of the package I was more worried about the center as it seemed very flimsy and I had doubts it would make it but my dog concentrated on the holes on the ends (with no snacks in them) and when he laid down to chew on it, he was able to rip the end off in a matter of minutes, This is also listed as for power chewers. I have other Kong toys I have ordered for him because he loves to play and chew but I can hardly afford to pay $8 to $10 per toy for him to have half a hour of chewing fun. I went back to TSC for a Kong Extreme Dog Toy and I tried one of the classic Kongs. The classic had one end missing in less than an hour. A Pit Bull breeder said the only thing he has found his dogs can play with and not destroy are bowling balls. He keeps his dogs in kennels and in a barn and my dog is a house dog so since I don't live in a bowling alley I know that I would wind up wishing he would only chew it up instead of roll it into every piece of furniture or a wall. I had such high hopes for the Kong Extreme but it is said to have a dog get attached to a toy then have to take it away from him every ten to fifteen minutes because a power chew toy can't hold up to chewing. Off to find an alternative to Kong,,,,, one toy out of five holding up is not a good recommendation and very expensive to try to find something the dog can enjoy and not destroy.

KONG; consistently sturdy!
Color: bone, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
This toy is small enough for my 11 pound puppy and he loves it. It's also sturdy enough (as KONG products always are) to withstand his terrier jaws and ability to destroy most toys in under 5 minutes. Keeps him busy for hours.
