Роман про подію 1352 року, що в будь-який іншій країні була б занесена у шкільні підручники, - об'єднане польсько-угорське військо, підсилене загонами з Франції та Італії, зазнало нищівної поразки під містом Белз (нині Львівська область). При тому, що гарнізон Белза нараховував п'ятсот чоловік, із яких більшість були ополченцями - міщанами та селянами з навколишніх сіл. Ця перемога зіграла вирішальну роль у тому, що український народ не щез із лиця землі.

Навіть історики-професіонали мало що знають про війну за незалежність, яку вела Га­лицько-Волинська держава у 1340-1384 роках проти цілої коаліції: Угорщини (яка була вп'ятеро більша за сучасну), Польського королівства, князівств Мазовїі та Сілезії.

І це не дивно, наші літописи не збереглися, тільки деякі договори. Небагато джерел і в на­ших ворогів, і в нейтральних держав. Автор, спираючись, головним чином, на італійські й угорські джерела, спробував створити реконструкцію однієї з кульмінаційних подій цієї вій­ни - облоги Белза.
