The Old Testament, particularly the Former Prophets (Joshua, Judges, 1-2 Samuel, and 1-2 Kings), has frequently been regarded as having a negative attitude towards foreigners. This has meant that these texts are often employed by those opposed to the Christian faith to attack the Bible—and such views can be echoed by Christians. While the story of David and Goliath is cherished, other episodes are seen to involve "ethnic cleansing" or "massacre" and are avoided. David Firth's contention is that this approach emerges from an established interpretation of the text, but not the text itself. In this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume, he argues that the Former Prophets subvert the exclusivist approach in order to show that the people of God are not defined by ethnicity but rather by their willingness to commit themselves to the purposes of Yahweh. God's purposes are always wider than Israel alone, and Israel must therefore understand themselves as a people who welcome and include the foreigner. Firth addresses contemporary concerns about the ongoing significance of the Old Testament for Christians, and shows how opponents of Christianity have misunderstood the Bible. His reading of the Former Prophets also has significant ethical implications for Christians today as they wrestle with the issues of migration and what it means to be the people of God.

______________

David G. Firth is tutor in Old Testament at Trinity College, Bristol. He is the author of 1 and 2 Samuel (Apollos Old Testament Commentary), The Message of Joshua, and Including the Stranger, and the coeditor of Interpreting the Psalms, Interpreting Isaiah, Words and the Word, and Presence, Power and Promise.

______________

"David Firth carefully traces out what can be learned of the ways in which foreigners were viewed in the Former Prophets. Along the way he draws attention to surprises: a foreign prostitute like Rahab becomes an Israelite, and an Israelite like Achan is cut off from the Israelites. Tracing the trajectories, Dr. Firth opens up biblical texts that are not as widely known as some passages, and drops tantalizing hints about the ultimate canonical move to the notion of God's people drawn from every tongue, tribe, people, and nation." D. A. Carson, Research Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

Absolutely as good as other brands!
Color: Linen Gray
A nice looking set of non stick pans! I have bought GreenPan and GreenLife? pans over the last 15-20 years. None have ever lasted more than about 3 years. I do cook a lot. These work as well and I like the price. Clean up easily. They have good heat distribution. Don’t know how long they will last, but for the price, it will be good. They are truly nonstick. Heavier than expected. Quality pans…not flimsy at all. I highly recommend these!

So Far Very Happy
Color: Ivory
I bought this set for my husband because: great reviews, terrific price, and the sizing was what we needed. We've had these for months and he just decided to try them. Well, he was shocked at how nice they cooked his food, and the quality of the product. We have a very hot stove, so they heat quickly. I love how easy they are to clean. So far this has been a good purchase. I hope they last better than some other brands we have tried over the years.

Budget-Friendly Pans, Top-Tier Performance
Color: Linen Gray
Because the price of these pans is so low, I honestly expected the quality to match—but was very pleasantly surprised. They heat evenly, and I’ve had zero issues with food sticking; everything just glides. On days when you feel like showing off, you can even skip the spatula and flip your pancakes (or other food) the fun way (flip tip: it’s all in the wrist!). Since nothing sticks, cleanup could not be easier. These Amazon Ceramic Nonstick frying pans are absolutely top tier, and at this price point—especially with gas at over 4 dollars a gallon & rising—the value cannot be beat. Definitely recommend!
