Overview

The Golden Red Tail Catfish is a large, freshwater fish known for its striking appearance, featuring a Golden body, white underside, and a vibrant red tail. Native to South America, it is a highly sought-after species in the aquarium trade but requires extensive care due to its massive size and rapid growth. It is best suited for advanced aquarists with large tanks or indoor ponds.

Origin
  • Native to: Amazon Basin, Orinoco River, and other large river systems in South America.
  • Habitat: Found in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and flooded areas with sandy or muddy substrates.
Feeding
  • Diet: Carnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Fish fillets, shrimp, prawns, earthworms, mussels, and sinking carnivore pellets.
  • Feeding Habits: Voracious eaters; should be fed 2–3 times per week to prevent obesity. Avoid feeder fish, as they can introduce diseases.
Tank Mates
  • Best with: Large, robust fish that can tolerate their presence, such as Arowanas, Peacock Bass, Pacu, and Giant Gouramis.
  • Avoid: Small fish and invertebrates, as they will be seen as food.
Aggression & Behavior
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful but will eat anything that fits in its mouth.
  • Territoriality: Can be aggressive toward similarly sized or smaller bottom-dwelling fish.
Experience Level
  • Difficulty: Advanced
  • Challenges: Requires an extremely large aquarium, powerful filtration, and careful monitoring of water quality.
Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Hardness: 2–15 dGH
  • Tank Size:Minimum 1,000 gallons for long-term care (juveniles can start in 200 gallons but outgrow it quickly).
Final Notes

Red Tail Catfish are often purchased as juveniles without considering their immense adult size, leading to frequent cases of rehoming. They require a dedicated and experienced aquarist with the ability to provide a massive tank or indoor pond. Proper care ensures they can live up to 20 years in captivity.

Durable against many rounds of zoomies
Strong bungee cord for sure, and my pup really likes pulling on it and playing tug with it. Originally bought it to encourage him away from underwear and socks, which almost worked. He likes chewing on the feet of the raccoon, so they’ve come off, but the lack of stuffing is wonderful. This is one of the longer lasting toys he’s had, and he’s had it for a couple of months, with its functionality still 100%. This seems to be almost like a toy within a toy, as you’ll still have the band when the rest is gone. Worth the money.

Cheap, and durable!
I bought this toy as a cheap temporary toy for my Rough Collie. Well, a month or so later, it's still alive. She has performed a 'squeakerectomy' on it, and it's lost it's springiness, but she still loves it.

Love the Stretch
I have two 15 ish pound dogs that love to pull and tug on this toy...all day long, every day. It's long enough for the humans in the house to also grab an end and not worry about getting nipped by playful pups. The fact that it stretches seems to be even more fun for the dogs. We have several other similar unstuffed long toys but they get very little attention. This toy is definitely unique and a cut above the other similar toys. The stretch seems to make all of the difference. If they had more animal choices, I would buy them all.

So cute!
Good size toy, but my 1yr old Jack Russell is NB match for it. It’s good quality and I’m sure it would last longer with a less aggressive chewer.

Dog loves it! Squeaky on both ends!
Bungee rope is not as resistant as I wished, but its fun nonetheless! Squeaks in head and tail. Misssteped the tail and broke one squeaker, still fun though! Toy can handle a beating. Really happy with it!
