Імовірно, єдиний роман По 'Оповідь про пригоди Артура Гордона Піма', виданий 1838 року, поклав початок в історії світової літератури таким художнім жанрам, як наукова фантастика і пригодницький роман. Окрім Лавкрафта, цим романом надихнувся такий автор, як Жуль Верн, котрий написав сиквел до цього твору, що називався 'Сфінкс крижаних рівнин'. А відомий японський письменник Оока Шьохей при написанні своєї повісті 'Вогні на рівнині', у якій він порушує питання канібалізму, позичив усю її структуру саме у згаданого роману По.
