This zone’s name comes from “Taurasia,” an ancient pre‑Roman winegrowing village in the same zone. For a wine to be labeled Taurasi it must be at least 85% Aglianico must be grown within designated municipalities in the province of Avellino, including the town of Taurasi itself. The Riserva wines must have a minimum 4 years of aging, including at least 18 months in wood. This wine is the Donnachiara Taurasi Riserva, selected down to the single best barrel. Winemaker Richard Cotarella dedicates it “To Umberto, a man of class and an enlightened entrepreneur. A dear friend to me.”

“The oaky latticework, as is the wont here, is apparent. The toast level, perfect for the style. This is thoroughly classy, stylistic preferences aside. Green olive, tobacco, blood plum & iodine. The tannins, pliant and beautifully welded to a gravely volcanic earthiness. The finish, tight and compressed by the oak, albeit, not overwhelmed by it. This will age very well.
