Además de sus connotaciones cristianas modernas, se utilizaron diferentes formas de la cruz como símbolo de diversas creencias a lo largo de la historia. En tiempos precristianos, la cruz era un símbolo religioso pagano en toda Europa y Asia occidental. En la antigüedad, la efigie de un hombre colgado de una cruz se colocaba en los campos para proteger los cultivo.
