Story
From his 1988 original print:
I have been to the Megin watershed many times over the past fifteen years and have enjoyed each visit. With every trip I make to this pristine wilderness, I am reminded of the beauty of creation and the healing and calmness it brings to each person who takes the time to enjoy it.
This year I returned to Megin Canyon twice to capture an image. The first trip in was during a rainstorm: the effort of a day’s paddle up the river was rewarded by very high water conditions which made it impossible to get in to the canyon to get what I was after. The story of that attempt can be heard if you take the time to talk to Stephen Mayor, our Eagle Aerie Gallery manager.
The second trip to the canyon was with my son, Gord. We had a wonderful time and came away with the inspiration for this, the latest of my creations.
The area is quite breathtaking, with huge granite rock formations to manoeuvre around before you gain access to the canyon. These rocks have been worn smooth by the continuous torrent of water over the years; there are some spots on the rocks that are shaped into comfortable areas in which to lay back and relax. The water that flows through the canyon has to pour over and around these beautiful rocks. It is a bit of a tricky spot to navigate through for a novice canoeist. Thanks to my Clipper canoe, we were able to get right into the canyon and Gord enjoyed a lesson in handling a canoe single-handed in the tight quarters of the canyon with the constant threat of fast water just below him. It was a particularly rewarding trip for me because of the bonding between father and son.
There is an added note that Gord would be quick to remind me of, and that is that I watched as he caught the only fish during the whole trip.
Since that trip to Megin Canyon, Gord has become a student of fly fishing and already knows more than I about this beautiful and artistic way of angling. So it is that I am proud to be a student of my son when it comes to fly fishing.
These are some of the thoughts that have inspired the creation of Megin Cayon.
