In the fascinating story of the sustainable food revolution, an environmental journalist and professor asks the question: Is the future of food looking bleak--or better than ever?

"In The Fate of Food, Amanda Little takes us on a tour of the future. The journey is scary, exciting, and, ultimately, encouraging."--Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction

Climate models show that global crop production will decline every decade for the rest of this century due to drought, heat, and flooding. Water supplies are in jeopardy. Meanwhile, the world's population is expected to grow another 30 percent by midcentury. So how, really, will we feed nine billion people sustainably in the coming decades?

Amanda Little, a professor at Vanderbilt University and an award-winning journalist, spent three years traveling through a dozen countries and as many U.S. states in search of answers to this question. Her journey took her from an apple orchard in Wisconsin to a remote control organic farm in Shanghai, from Norwegian fish farms to famine-stricken regions of Ethiopia.

The race to reinvent the global food system is on, and the challenge is twofold: We must solve the existing problems of industrial agriculture while also preparing for the pressures ahead. Through her interviews and adventures with farmers, scientists, activists, and engineers, Little tells the fascinating story of human innovation and explores new and old approaches to food production while charting the growth of a movement that could redefine sustainable food on a grand scale. She meets small permaculture farmers and "Big Food" executives, botanists studying ancient superfoods and Kenyan farmers growing the country's first GMO corn. She travels to places that might seem irrelevant to the future of food yet surprisingly play a critical role--a California sewage plant, a U.S. Army research lab, even the inside of a monsoon cloud above Mumbai. Little asks tough questions: Can GMOs actually be good for the environment--and for us? Are we facing the end of animal meat? What will it take to eliminate harmful chemicals from farming? How can a clean, climate-resilient food supply become accessible to all?

Throughout her journey, Little finds and shares a deeper understanding of the threats of climate change and encounters a sense of awe and optimism about the lessons of our past and the scope of human ingenuity.

Good quality dog ball for playing fetch
Size: Medium
My dog and family love these chuck it balls to play fetch with our dog. They are durable and fun. They squeak which is added fun for any dog! Regular tennis balls my dog chews apart and they get pretty gross after playing and being left outside. These can be easily washed off and cleaned. These balls last! Would recommend to anyone with a dog and would purchase again.

Perfect Dog Toys!
Color: Regular Ball Multi-color, Size: Medium
My dogs absolutely love these! My problem was I have two (of 4) that play ball. One is 15#'s and the other is 40#'s. So, I couldn't decide on the size. I decided on the medium, and they have been perfect. My smaller dog has a bit of a problem holding on to the ball, but he can get his mouth around it. For my larger dog, it's not so small I'm worried about her swallowing it. So, the size was perfect! These are thick enough neither of my tough chewers have been able to penetrate the balls, but soft enough they can easily pick them up. They have that squeak that drives my dogs nuts. The little faces on them are cute. We have spent hours playing ball with our two dogs with these balls. They absolutely love them. My small dog brings them to me constantly. Although. of the 7, it's a miracle if we know where 2 are at any given time. I actually remembered to write the review when I spotted 3 of them at the same time. My ONLY small complaint is the rubber plus dog slobber and rolling under furniture means these balls can pick up a lot of dust and hair. I have to rinse them occasionally as they can get rather gross. Luckily, they are very easy to clean with water and dry with a paper towel. Then they are as good as new! We can get right back to playing. I highly recommend these balls as you will spend hours enjoying watching your dogs play fetch. We absolutely play ball in the house, as watching the mayhem of two dogs chase the ball down hallways and across rooms in incredibly entertaining!

Only One of Two Toys That Any of My Three Dogs Will Play With
Color: Burger Shape Assorted Color, Size: Small
I can’t overemphasize this enough: My pooches just aren’t keen on toys. I don’t know why. I’ve tried everything to get them to play with SOMETHING, instead of just lying around, or begging ME to do all the work to entertain them all the time. But whenever I buy or make one for them, all three just look at me like, “Meh. Bored. Try again, Ma.” Until I bought these. I’ll spare the reader a lot of details, but for whatever reason, these little, round, mouth-sized squeakers were a hit. There’s literally nothing special about their construction or functionality at all, but my dogs think they’re great. Kinda like how kids don’t care about the fancy, expensive toy you bought them, but prefer to play with the box it came in. 🤷‍♀️ I was concerned about them getting chewed up the first day (or worse, getting swallowed), or me just being driven insane with the squeaking, but only the latter has been an issue, and only the first few days. My dogs are very diverse mixed breeds and sizes, and all three think these are the best thing ever. My medium-sized bulldog is so adorable: He very gently picks one up, squeaks it a little bit, and then runs around holding it in his mouth until he decides to drop it (usually 30 seconds or less). Then my big dog swooshes in and steals it from him (It’s a “game” that only one of them enjoys). The biggest annoyance with these is having to go pick them up wherever my poorly-trained doggos drop them (but that’s my fault, of course). In a nutshell: They’re a hit at my house. Just be vigilant the first few days to make sure your dog isn’t interested in trying to eat them.
