Victron 24V to 12V Orion-Tr Smart Isolated DC-DC Charger: Intelligent Power Conversion for Dual-Battery Systems
Efficient 24V to 12V DC-DC Charging with Adaptive 3-Stage Algorithm and Bluetooth Control
The Victron Orion-Tr Smart Isolated DC-DC Charger delivers precise, regulated power conversion from a 24V alternator or battery bank to a 12V auxiliary system. Designed for vehicles, marine vessels, and off-grid installations, this charger solves the common challenge of safely stepping down voltage while maintaining battery health. Unlike basic converters that risk overcharging or undercharging, the Orion-Tr Smart uses an adaptive 3-stage charge algorithm (Bulk, Absorption, Float) to extend battery life and ensure reliable starts every time.
With 30A of continuous current and a peak output of 45A for short surges, it handles demanding loads such as fridge compressors, lighting, and communication equipment. The integrated Bluetooth Smart interface allows full configuration and monitoring via the VictronConnect app, eliminating the need for additional displays or complex wiring. This isolated design provides galvanic isolation up to 200V DC between input, output, and case, protecting sensitive electronics from ground loops and voltage spikes—a critical advantage in mixed-voltage systems.
Smart Alternator Compatibility and Programmable Charge Profiles
Modern vehicles with Euro 5/6 compliant smart alternators often output variable voltage, which can confuse standard DC-DC chargers. The Orion-Tr Smart features an engine detection mechanism that prevents unwanted discharge of the starter battery when the engine is off. You can program custom charge profiles to match your battery chemistry—whether AGM, Gel, Flooded, or Lithium—ensuring optimal charging without manual intervention. The adjustable output voltage range of 10-15V provides flexibility for sensitive loads or specific battery requirements.
Robust Design for Harsh Australian Conditions
Built to withstand the rigours of outback travel and coastal marine environments, the Orion-Tr Smart features an IP43 protection rating when installed with screw terminals facing downward. The extruded aluminium heatsink provides efficient passive cooling, allowing continuous operation at full rated power up to 40°C ambient temperature. Screw terminals accept cables up to 16 mm² (AWG6), ensuring low-resistance connections and minimal voltage drop over long cable runs. The compact footprint of 130 x 186 x 80 mm and weight of 1.8 kg simplifies installation in tight spaces such as under-bonnet, behind panels, or in battery compartments.
Key Features
- Adaptive 3-stage charge algorithm with programmable battery presets for AGM, Gel, Flooded, and Lithium
- Bluetooth Smart for wireless monitoring, configuration, and firmware updates via VictronConnect app
- Galvanic isolation (200V DC) eliminates ground loop interference and protects against voltage transients
- Engine detection prevents starter battery drain when the alternator is not running
- Remote on/off terminal for integration with battery management systems or manual switches
- Parallel operation supported for higher current requirements
- Wide input voltage range of 20-35V accommodates voltage fluctuations in 24V systems
- Short circuit, over-temperature, and reverse polarity protection
Applications
This charger is ideal for powering 12V house batteries in trucks, buses, motorhomes, and boats with 24V electrical systems. It also suits off-grid solar installations where a 24V battery bank needs to supply 12V loads, or in industrial equipment requiring stable 12V power from a 24V source. The isolated design makes it safe for use in systems with sensitive communication or navigation electronics.
Whether you're upgrading a dual-battery system in a 4WD, fitting out a marine electronics suite, or building a remote power system, the Victron Orion-Tr Smart provides the reliability and intelligence needed for critical power conversion. Order your Victron Orion-Tr Smart Isolated DC-DC Charger today and experience seamless 24V to 12V power management with full app control.
