Polyps extend from a leather-like cap that sits on top of the main stem, whilst the whole thing will sway in the current the polyps move much more vigorously. The polyps of Sarcophyton species sometimes host clownfish in the same way as an anemone does.

Toadstools tend to multiply by either ‘budding off’, when a small fragment drops off and grows wherever it lands or by new smaller toadstools growing from around the base. Toadstools can sometimes ‘sulk’, this often precedes them ‘shedding’, the process of losing their outermost layer of skin to allow for growth.

These soft corals can thrive in a range of positions and add an eye-catching focal point to any reef tank. Preferring moderate to high light levels as well as moderate to high flow.
