З появою на початку XVIII ст. французького перекладу А. Галлана славетної арабської збірки казок '1001 ніч' книга стає улюбленою для європейських читачів. У ній, з одного боку, химерно переплелися світ чарівний зі світом людським, а з іншого — пропонуються прецікаві оповідки з життя міщан та оточення халіфа, сповнені складних інтригуючих пригод. Проте 'арабських казок' на додаток до тих, які можна прочитати у збірці, існує так само чимало. їхнє побутування значною мірою — винятково усне. Одні казки тримають у сімейній пам’яті бабусі, мами та няні, інші — складають усний репертуар професійних оповідачів на вулицях. Найкраще враження від цього народного спадку можна отримати із фольклорних записів кінця XIX — початку XX ст. Такі казки, прислів’я та приказки записував у ліванських селах та м. Бейруті Агатангел Кримський протягом відрядження до Сходу (1896-1898). Пропонована читачеві збірка казок — це переклад та літературна обробка українською мовою арабських текстів, зібраних А. Кримським.
