Події розгортаються на широкому історичному тлі — у книзі майстерно змальовано звичаї, політичну атмосферу та побут тієї доби. Через призму людських доль Реймонт відкриває драму епохи — великі історичні події постають не як абстракція, а як жива реальність. Перший том, 'Останній сейм Речі Посполитої', занурює читача в атмосферу політичного напруження, внутрішніх суперечностей та зневіри напередодні Костюшківського повстання.
