Old-growth forests touch the soul of many people. Some hear the echoes of Native Americans or the first settlers. Some feel the great age of the trees and revere them, while others feel they are in the presence of an overwhelmingly rare beauty. Still others understand the profound scientific value of old-growth forests as reference systems for what forests can be.

Despite the remarkable emotional appeal and scientific value of old-growth forests, they are rare in Wisconsin. Only 0.3% ofWisconsin’s old-growth forests remain, but these scattered, small parcels still retain their ability to amaze hikers with their size, beauty, and elegance.

Where are they? This book directs visitors to the 50 best old-growth sites left in Wisconsin. Each site has clear directions, a listing of ownership, size, and age, and a description of its ecological features, with perhaps a story of why it was saved. A map and photo(s) illustrates each site. An additional shorter chapter includes the “50 Best-of- the-Rest.”

The book is for a general audience, but its wealth of rigorously-researched and profusely-illustrated data may also serve as a general reference for professional ecologists and conservationists.

Experience Wisconsin’s history told though the annals of forests. Our Living Ancestors artfully captures the essence of woodlands and contains the most thorough documentation of old-growth remnants left in Wisconsin. A must read for the natural history enthusiast and professional land manager alike.
- Matt Dallman, Director of Conservation, The Nature Conservancy, Wisconsin

Ancient forests are a topic of perpetual fascination for many of us, but amateurs and professionals alike frequently misunderstand these most senior of our woodlands. Enter naturalist John Bates. His extraordinarily detailed descriptions of Wisconsin’s old-growth forests lift the veil of mystery and provide us with glimpses of what the Badger State’s extensive pre-settlement forests were like. The book is a veritable goldmine of information on the sad destruction of Wisconsin’s original woodlands. Attitudes toward old growth, then and now, are explored along with an authoritative account of the biological and genetic diversity at risk when nature’s true woodlands are compromised. These accounts are followed by an extensive inventory of today’s old-growth remnants. There is simply no better book written on these topics for a wide audience than Our Living Ancestor – The History and Ecology of Old-Growth Forests in Wisconsin (and Where to Find Them). No serious amateur or professional can be without it.
- Robert T. Leverett, Cofounder, The Native Tree Society; Coauthor, The Sierra Club Guide to Ancient Forests of the Northeast

This book is an ideal resource for anyone who wants to understand Wisconsin’s forests. It is extremely well researched, clearly presented, and masterfully written. Bates has turned what could be a dry subject into a lively, living, symphony of words. There is something for everyone here, whether you are an office-bound historian or a hiker who wants to experience the last remnants of wild ancient forests. John Bates has done us all a great favor by putting this important information together in one perfect package.
- Joan Maloof, Founder and Director of the Old-Growth Forest Network, and author of Among the Ancients and Nature’s Temples.

Versatile and Sturdy Storage Solution
Size: 2.5" & 4" - 4 Pack, Style: Open Hooks, Size: 2.5" & 4" - 4 Pack, Style: Open Hooks
The GATOR MAGNETICS Open Storage Hook has been a great (pricey) solution for adding hooks that are strong and useful. Its simple yet robust design makes it incredibly versatile for various uses around the house. The hook feels sturdy and durable, capable of holding a surprising amount of weight without bending or warping. Installation is as easy as blinking your eyes; the really strong magnets allow for easy attachment to any magnetic surface, and the hook remains securely in place. I've used it for hanging lights and bags in my office and bedroom, providing a neat and accessible storage solution in any setting. The open design ensures quick access to items without the hassle of removing them from a closed loop, which is a fantastic convenience. The magnet seems to be protected well enough with a rubber surface so that I don't have to worry about damaging my tables that I have attached these hooks. In terms of value for money, this storage hook is pricey but no competition that I've seen with the same level of durability and convenience. I'm impressed by its performance and versatility, making it a must-have for anyone looking to organize their space efficiently. Pros: Sturdy and durable build quality Easy magnetic installation on metal surfaces Versatile usage for multiple items Convenient open design for quick access Doesn't damage surfaces Cons: None that I've encountered so far! (Maybe price?) Overall, I highly recommend the GATOR MAGNETICS Open Storage Hook for its durability, versatility, and exceptional functionality. It's a small investment that brings significant organization and efficiency to any space.

Amazingly strong and versatile
Size: 2.5" & 4" - 4 Pack, Style: Open Hooks
I saw these advertised on Instagram and immediately purchased a 4 pack. I really wanted them to work but after trying them on 4-5 different steel surfaces I couldn't'[t get any of them to stick well or hold anything heavier than a wet towel. Maybe a bad batch? A shame. The company took the time to reach out to me after seeing my first review where the hooks wound stick to metal poles in my studio. I definitely was not expecting them to reach out to address my issues with the hooks I purchased and returned. After trying the new replacement hooks out I now could not be more impressed! They are strong, well made and easy to use. The hooks and the magnetic baskets are phenomenal and I highly recommend them. I did a test with the hooks, which held a 75 lb weight with no issues on the side of a craftsman tool box! It seems that any early product issues are fixed. The customer service is fantastic and they really took the time to address the issues and keep their customers coming back happy. Well done! Gator Magnetics is definitely a class act in my book!

25 lb hanger doesn’t hold my Echo trimmer
Size: 4" - Red, Style: Open Hooks, Size: 4" - Red, Style: Open Hooks
Purchased the holders for my Echo trimmer and hedger but the tines are not long enough to hold the Echos. A picture in the description shows a gas powered unit hanging which is why I bought the hangers. Buy the larger 45 lb hanger for trimmers. Nice hook but I’ll probably send them back if i can’t find a use for them soon.

Handy
Size: 4" - Black, Style: Open Hooks
I use an ocean container for storage and have some things that need to be hanging. These are perfect for any place you are unable to drive nails. I bought the stronger ones and have had no problems. Ordered more after trying them.
